I am testing it now (the M1 build) and it's pretty snappy. Speedometer 2 scores 197 vs 219 in Safari (Chrome 187) but in actual usage I don't see any real difference and I can use all the Chrome extensions, plus I can sync with Android. So I think I might actually switch to it. I feel weird using a browser by Microsoft though... ?

Edge is my preferred browser for work and in instances where I want to use multiple profiles. I am currently using the Canary build which supports the M1 chip - though canary builds are unstable, it’s been good so far.

I use Safari for my personal needs though.

Yeah I am using the Canary. The only issue I've had so far is that it wouldn't open app.pulumi.com which works in other browsers.

my results are a bit different, edge canary m1 is still a littler slower than the other options for me. safari is the fastest but chrome is very close. I found that certain extensions can dramatically bring down the scores on the chromium-based browsers, i wonder if that is why your chrome score is so much lower. I do have keystone fully disabled as well.

This is weird, I actually tested Edge with more things running than when I tested Safari and Chrome (e.g. with Docker running). I will try again after a reboot and compare the three of them with nothing else running.

The higher number is better?

Yep

Interesting. I have repeated the test 3 times for each browser in the exact same conditions (nothing else running and no extensions activated) and averaged the results:

Safari: 233
Chrome: 210
Edge: 190

Uhm... back to Safari :D

The score is meaningless. I switched to Safari after the whole keystone thing but the general browsing of Twitter, Reddit, etc. is so much better on Chrome & Edge. There was a noticeable delay in the autoplay of videos and the scrolling laggier in Safari.

Went back to Chrome after a few hours. Using Edge now.

I will probably give it a try once it leaves canary/alpha testing. I really like the new Edge browser on my Surface Go 2 (runs in S mode so no Chrome) and would be nice to just have everything sync.

And yeah, I've noticed that websites just seem "jankier" and less responsive in Safari compared to chromium-based browsers. Not sure why that is, but Google sites and some others like Reddit in particular are noticeably slower.

I absolutely ignore tests like Speedometer. I prefer to go by how a browser feels - particularly the scrolling. I would rather use a browser 50% slower if it scrolls like butter than one like Safari which stutters each time I scroll. Safari is the worst M1 browser for scrolling. Firefox is better, but still stutters as I scroll busy pages. Chrome was great - until Edge came along. Edge is the best of the lot. Fast and much smoother than any of the others. I have a Mac Mini and an Apple Magic Mouse 2. I'm sure the experience with a trackpad is inherently better anyway. It's interesting that on a 2012 Mac Mini running Catalina I can easily achieve the most sublime smoothness with Firefox by adding a crafted user.js file to the profile directory., but on the M1 the same user.js file makes no difference at all. There are many posts online about the scrolling issue and some believe it is to do with Big Sur, rather than anything to do with the M1 architecture.
