I can hardly wait for these new AirPods X. My BeatsX just overheated and started melting and died. Overall the BeatsX were good—I used them for all my Apple devices so they always hung behind my neck at home which I loved (vs true wireless individual earbuds that I’d have to keep in a case in my pocket—if I even had a pocket), and with the W1 chip they worked much nicer with my Apple devices than regular Bluetooth headphones. But that power button was impossible, and switching between devices still could have been smoother, and the battery life was becoming abysmal. And they were not great for running because the controls on the wire bounced around and pulled the earbud out of my ear.
Really hoping they give it a better power button that you can actually find by feel and press easily, but knowing Apple they will probably continue to sacrifice functionality for the sleeker look. Also hoping they move the controls to the neck base instead of the wire so it doesn’t bounce around when running, but not holding my breath for that either. But at the very least they’ll put in the H1 chip which should bring faster device switching (and I believe iOS 14 will bring easier switching—in iOS 13 it requires quite a few taps, swipes, and long presses), better range (I was fine with W1 range though), and possibly better battery life.
As far as diminishing battery life, I guess that’s just a fact of going wireless. It just really stinks that we can’t replace the battery though, instead of every few years throwing away otherwise perfectly working headphones (except when they melt) and adding to the landfills, then spending money on new headphones. What a waste.
