Who here regrets updating to Yosemite?

Anybody here regret updating from whatever OSX iteration you had to Yosemite? How come?

Those who do not regret it, what features does Yosemite possess over Mavericks?

I myself have stuck with Mavericks as I don't see the point of updating.

You'll basically find two schools of thought, as evidenced by these threads:

In other words, whether you're talking about the UI or the functionality, Yosemite will appeal to some and not to others. What really matters is whether it works for you.

Like you, I'm still running Mavericks and I have no motivation to upgrade. Yosemite doesn't offer anything I need that Mavericks doesn't already provide.

I installed Yosemite on two MacBook models just to try it out. It's rather buggy but not anything as bad as iOS 8.1.3 on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Conversely I'm sticking with my well sorted out Mavericks on my mission critical MBPr and MacPro. Those two are the backbone, the main tools I rely on for work. Fast smooth and very stable, there's no way I'm considering any changes. Right now they're absolutely outstanding.

I'm probably going to get it from both sides but ...

I haven't really noticed a difference. No real slow-downs, went in and tweaked a few things (Dark Mode rules!), just a few bugs here and there.

Isn't "regret" a poor choice of words when you can always go back?

Not that I regretted upgrading, but a few weeks ago I was forced to do a clean install and thought I'd rather go with Mavericks in case the issue I experienced was related to Yosemite. As it turns out, it seems it might have been related but anyway. Since downgrading, I couldn't be happier, the whole OS X experience is better in 10.9.5 plain and simple. It made me realize that besides the new UI, any of the new features in Yosemite is something I don't need. I don't need to make calls on my Mac, I don't need handoff, continuity. But I need speed and stability. It would be unfair to critize 10.10 on stability, as it was, for me at least, pretty solid - but speed.... Finder, Safari for example, slow in the case of the Finder, and awfully slow in the case of Safari 8.

I couldn't say I regretted it (I thought performance would improve over time), but now that I'm back to 10.9.5, I've clearly seen the difference, and I certainly don't regret downgrading.

nahh hopefully you won't get anything from any side - good for you and glad you have working as you need.

I updated not because I needed any of the new features but so that I can be on the latest version.

I run Yosemite on both a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini I have not experienced any problems on either system. The most intensive applications I use would be video processing of files from my GoPro camera.

I find Yosemite to be very nice and don't regret it for a minute. I currently have it on all 5 Mac's in my household, and since 10.10.2, Nobody has any complaints. Wifi issues have disappeared, Airdrop is working well, and I haven't had any crashes. I am very happy with it!

I have stayed on Mavericks on my 2012 i7 Mac Mini. When I bought it in September, I immediately upgraded to Mavericks. I'm staying there for a long time.

I do, although I have downgraded to Mavericks and the issues from Yosemite have not ended.

Upgraded to Yosemite a few months back, and everything works fine. I've found little to no bugs, and everything seems to be running smoothly.

The only real difference is just aesthetics though. Nothing much has changed, however everything just seems much neater and easier on the eyes.


If you don't really care about aesthetics, than you might as well keep using Mavericks. But know that if you do upgrade, nothing much really changes and everything should run perfectly fine.

got rid of yosemite

Hi,

I did the mistake to down(up)grade to yosemite. What a nightmare! Apps take ages to start, whatever you did, screen saver reverts to National Geographic, iPhoto's not working as good as before.
So, I (down)upgraded back to Snow Leopard. Back again an happy Apple user.
Good news is: what you saved with Time Machine is still available.

Conclusion: it's a shame that Apple who scores millions in benefits doesn't use some of them to clean their mess.

I upgraded to Yosemite when it was first released. On my 2009 MBP, it was slow and laggy. After 2-3 weeks of frustration I went back to Mavericks which ran great. When 10.10.2 was released I did a clean install of Yosemite once again. Now I'm on 10.10.3 beta and, with transparency off and using the discrete GPU it is much better than it was at first. Definitely not the same as Mavericks but usable.

Things I love that made me go back to it again: the new look, the messaging/calling integration with my iPhone and the new Photos app. For these things I can put up with somewhat slower performance.

I am running Yosemite on my production machine since around the third developer preview. I definitely not regret it. Safari and Mail (both applications I use a lot) have improved significantly. The new OS-level plugin system has simplified some of my workflows. WiFi problems I was experiencing on Mavericks have been completely fixed with Yosemite. The battery life of the computer has improved significantly and UI-related performance has (impressionistically) improved as well. Besides, I like the new visual theme.

Does it have bugs? Definitively, some of them are also quite serious, such as the random hard freezes (happens on average once in two weeks). However, these freezes are definitively less annoying then constant WiFi drops I had with Mavericks or irresponsible Mail/crashing Safari that I had with earlier OS X versions.

I "upgraded" the 3 Macs in my household to Yosemite a few months ago after some hard drive upgrades. While I was less than impressed initially, I decided to stick with it. As time goes by, I'm becoming less and less impressed and considering upgrading back to 10.9.5.

Apps seem to be hanging at an increasing rate (especially Preview)...

Time Machine regularly (every few weeks) pops up a dialog saying the backup drive has changed...

Random hangs and laggyness abound. I'm finding myself doing hard resets a few times a week. It's like I'm back using a Windoze machine. 10.10.2 made a no noticeable improvement. There's no real reason why I had to upgrade; I don't really make use of any new features - in fact are there any besides the iPhone integration that I have no use for as I don't plan on ever owning an iPhone?

Oh yeah, and while Helvetica Neue has grown on me, the interface is still ugly.
