I have a prepaid plan with Rogers and am currently using a Samsung j706.

Just for one less thing to carry around (iPod Touch and cellphone), I was thinking of swiping an iPhone off Craigslist and putting my j706's SIM inside.

A few questions:

1) Will Rogers know or care that I'm using an iPhone on prepaid?

2) I have to pay 3¢ per kilobyte for data, screw that. Is there a way to terminate ALL data connections to the iPhone and just use Wi-Fi?

3) Is syncing music to an iPhone the same as syncing to an iPod? When the iPhone first came out in 2007, I think I remember reading that music syncing is "different" somehow. I could just be going crazy.

4) How well does the iPhone hold a battery charge (compared to a 1st-gen Touch)?

Thanks for your time.

I'll try to help as much as possible.
I'm in the States so I can't speak for if Rogers will care about you using the phone. I can only assume that they will not care they are making money off of you using the service. I have used the iPhone here on T-Mobile prepaid and a small local company and neither cared and were really helpful.

You can turn off the edge connection for data. You must jailbreak you phone and install either SBSettings or BossPrefs. Both programs are made by the same person. Bigboss he has his own repository on Cydia. I use this for my wife to turn off edge data because she just wanted to use the phone and not have data. Works great no charged on my bill.

Syncing music, videos, etc. is exactly the same. Playlist and all.

Can't compare battery life, but I can go 2-3 days without charging my phone on my prepaid account. My phone that is on my contract account I usually have to charge every night because I'm a heavy data user. Email, Web, youtube, vetwork connection to my server and more.

Good luck.

You don't even have to do that. I used my iPhone on a contract without data at first and to block data I just went into

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data and changed the APN, username and password to rubbish. Whenever I tried to use safari etc without wifi it popped up saying it couldn't connect to the data network.

I did this on my boyfriend's unlocked but not jailbroken iPhone too. I think I changed his APN to "No Way Jose" or some rubbish like that :)

Or go to http://unlockit.co.nz and install the fake APN.

Also Syncing the iPhone music *is* different from an iPod. You can only sync with 1 computer at a time. If you want to add some music to your iPhone while you're at work, but your iPhone is sync'd at home... you're screwed.... even when it's set to Manually Manage Music.
