A little poll, who is going to buy the Apple TV after todays MacWorld.

I am a little disappointed that they didn't upgrade the hardware. I like that they added HD content. I plan on getting one soon.

I am

I currently have one in my family room and was waiting for the announcement before buying a second one for my bedroom. Definitely will now. Still have my $100 credit from my iPhone purchase so it will only cost $129!

I am very happy with the announced changes.

I'd love to buy one, but as someone based in the UK, it would be kinda pointless considering its current state in this country.

Firstly, we didn't get a price drop in the UK. It's still £199 (around $392) and £269 ($530), whereas the US prices are now $229 (around £116) and $329 (£167). Even with sales tax factored in, this is still way too expensive. Here's hoping that Apple have simply made a mistake and haven't dropped the UK prices yet.

Secondly, the movie rentals, a huge feature in this updated Apple TV, are not available here yet. If and when this comes along, I may well look into buying one.

I'm going to pick up one soon. Not really interested in the movie rentals though. Netflix is still cheeper for me... but the price drop from Apple is nice! :D

Same here. Buying a second one so I don't have to take my current one back and forth between the basement and bedroom... :p

i think this is a very strong device now with the renting of movies, not buying.

I'd still rather have dvd's over hard drives for movies right now.

It depends on the 5.1 pass-through - if it is done via optical or HDMI. If I can do it with optical, I'll buy one in the next few months. Otherwise, I'll hold off for some time.

Now it's time to start pouring over aTV posts to find out if I can rip my current DVD collection with 5.1 passthrough...

DD will play over optical or HDMI.

Wasn't the last day to use that like a month ago? (The $100 Gift Card?)

EDIT: Found out it was actually just having the paper work in but doesn't reflect on the actual use because it's like an Apple Gift Card.

I just found a 160GB Apple TV on Craigslist for $200 - see if I can snatch it up :)

Cool, good luck. I got my brand new in the box 40GB on CL about six months ago.

While it would be nice to have one in my bedroom I'll wait to see how the software update and the DD 5.1 works. I watched a video of Walt Mossberg (maybe a different video I've watched several) and he made it sound like the update would be mailed to registered users? Won't it be pushed through iTunes?

update via menu

i read the update will be done through the atv software update in settings. I bought one today at the lower price. i'm having no problem streaming via wireless my ripped dvds. that being the case not being able to add a usb drive directly is no big deal for me.

i am going to buy it prolly this weekend.. before today thought the apple tv was dead and was going to be silently discontinued but today that i was re-released and that it supports movie rentals i am defiantly buying one maybe even 2.. this is going to save me the trip to blockbuster:apple::apple:

I'm buying it (again, sold the last one on eBay before Christmas). :)

I'm just waiting for Amazon to lower their price to $229 and get them in stock for Amazon Prime shipping.

Definitely getting one. Had to work late so couldn't go tonight, but will tomorrow. Would have liked a HW upgrade, but this will do. When/If they every do a HW upgrade, I'll just move this one to the bedroom or workout room. Was waiting until after MWSF to figure out what to do... have been surviving on playing videos on my PS3 until now.

Still won't buy it because still can't attach my external drives to it.

I don't understand your issue here exactly. You can connect as many external drives you want to your Mac/PC, and store the videos/movies on all the external drives and access via iTunes. Apple TV then streams/copies them from iTunes (aka the external drive). So, ATv does access the external drives, just via your computer/iTunes. (You can add files into iTunes and not have it copy them by holding down Option when you drag the file into iTunes.)

Apple TV will update over the Internet. You can either manually check for updates or it will alert you that an update is available within a week.

I will surely be getting one more for the bedroom. I waited to purchase just in case they updated the hardware. Software is what I was banking on though.

I was thinking about it, but I sort of want to see how Netflix responds. I've always tried to support them vs Blockbuster.

Might be time for me to cash in my piggy bank containing the spare change I've collected over the last year.

I'm not buying another, the one I have right here is working fine. ;)

I wonder how long it will take for us Canadians to get movie rentals though...
