Who is doing their homework before they get their M1 Mac?

Because I love my little HP Laserjet 1022n that someone literally threw away (had on the curb), that I got two missing parts for (plus a new toner cartridge), I know I want to be able to keep using it, when I get my M1 Mac Mini. So, I jumped over to HP's website to see if it was supported in Big Sur...

Now, I'm just wondering if they'll offer an M1-native driver next...

My current printers (yes, plural) work natively with M1 and Big Sur, so there's no way for me to try Gutenprint anymore... but Gutenprint really helped out a lot with some of my past older (dead!) printers.

Are you referring to the built-in MacOS printer drivers (CUPS)? Or do you mean the drivers for your printers are actually already M1-native now? What brand/model of printers do you have?

My main printer is an HP Envy 6055. It has Airplay, so I'm guessing the driver is just going through Airplay.
We also have a Brother printer at home, and it also does Airplay.

Sorry for my ignorance but isn’t Big Sur and the M1 two different things? i.e. being Big Sur compatible doesn’t guarantee M1 compatibility?

This is technically accurate. But you want to first be sure your drivers support the “baseline” (Big Sur), then the M1 SoC. The reason I say this is because Rosetta 2 should be able to handle Intel Mac x86 drivers until M1-native drivers are available.

Right, ok thanks. The OS bit has always made sense but it was the M1 bit I wasn’t sure on. Don’t want to take for granted that everything works under R2 but hopefully it’s few and far between that things don’t ?

No idea about that printer by our HP LaserJet P1606dn works fine with Big Sur on Intel Macs.

Per post #1, the Laserjet 1022n's driver was updated on Nov 13, 2020 for Big Sur compatibility.

This thread was not just to talk about printers... it was meant to get a concensus on how many people are actually doing their due diligence before getting (or having gotten) an M1 Mac. Obviously, that won't be the magic cure-all, but... it's the best place to start.

Judging by the many threads on this very topic, I’d say everyone is doing it.

Just realised that I have had my M1 Air a week and still not set up my printers yet. They are both fine. I must confess I checked the software before I bought the M1, but did not think about the printers.

That completely makes sense, because the M1 translates the Intel code. If it worked in Big Sur on Intel, it will work in Big Sur on the M1.

If the printer didn't work, it would be an incompatibility with Big Sur, not with the M1.

As far as Apple Printer drivers that is probably valid, however I an Application (Screenflow) that works on on Big Sur, but does not work on Apple Silicon Yet. I did know this before I bought the M1 Air, as I can still use it on my iMac that is running Big Sur.

I guess Screenflow runs at much lower OS level than a printer driver, probably because it's capturing the video output. I'd hope that developers will fix these things over time.
