I think there's alot good that comes with bad. I dont like the fact that My Content is placed last on the list. It is more difficult to get to my stuff with take 2. I found the previous version much easier to use.

I plan on watching and playing my stuff more that buying new content. Just my 2 cents.

Do like that I can now get podcasts directly on the ATV.

Wasn't it always? I suppose organizing it all into a submenu is a bit of an extra step, but I don't really weave in and out of menus very often. (Edit: while poking around, I've also discovered that the menu remembers where you were last--so if you go directly to "My Music", for example, the next time you go to the music menu, it'll start there, which effectively puts it at the top of the list. This seems to solve your issue entirely.)

Maybe my use is atypical, but I either turn it on to listen to music or to watch videos and I don't do any alternating back and forth in rapid succession.

The thing I don't like is that the default menu screen is plastered with spaced out movie posters and ugly ranking text. I'd be okay with album or movie art, tiled, or with some sort of subtle animation or more neutral background. When you pull the menu up in other screens, say, from "Music", it looks much better.

I'm not sure what their motivation for putting the movie rentals in that format was, except maybe to force people to notice that "hey, you can rent a movie now!"

I don't get it. Who says you have to upgrade? Does using an older system make a person an "idiot"?

You must consider all Windows XP users and 10.4 users idiots as well...

so explain why you don't want to update, do you not like the new UI? You haven't really explained why you don't want to update.

I don't rent nor buy using my :apple:TV - so I really don't see the need to have all that stuff on there...

I buy iTunes videos using my iBook, then place it on my PC server to be sync'd with my iPhone and streamed to my :apple:TV.

Seems like you have more steps to go through to get to your own content.

Actually, it's just the opposite, despite appearances.

Before, the top of the "Music" menu included the handful of iTunes store links (top songs, etc.) that you had to scroll through. The new setup no longer clutters your "My Music" menu with those options, and so at a minimum, it is one or two fewer button clicks to get to, say, your playlists.

I've also noted some better quality playback on certain videos from iTunes, and direct access to podcasts actually delivers quite a lot of free HD content.

So if the only thing stopping you is that it looks like there are "more" steps, you should go for it, since there are in fact fewer steps now.

Great post - thank you.

I plan on going to the Apple store to check it out. I love :apple:TV so much, I think I may leave the one in my bedroom on the older system (attached to a small 17" LCD panel with small speakers) just to stream my own content and get a new one with the newer system for my home theater to watch HD content and maybe rent...

Not quite. Take 2 is a free upgrade.

I assume you want to stand out from the crowd, unless you can clarify exactly what it is about Take 2 you don't like compared to Take 1.

I have not upgraded as yet.

I plan on going to the Apple Store and playing with Take 2 there.

Depending what I see will determine if and when I will upgrade.

I know my current setup and usage, if it does not benefit me directly why should I upgrade? Just because it's a free upgrade alone is not good enough reason in my opinion.

I'm waiting on a proper method to update with a hacked atv ... I use divx's to much to rush and have something break.

Won't the :apple:TV update itself automatically anyway after a week?

No. It will look for an update about once a week and ask you if you would like to download it. If you don't, it will ask again the next week until you upgrade.
