iPod Who Rates there Music Properly

I don't. I have playlists for that. I like all my music. If I didn't, I wouldn't have it on my computer. 
There's no such thing as rating music "properly". Rating is purely a subjective process. You give high or low ratings, based on your own personal preferences. How can that be improper? I haven't taken the time to start rating my library, but if I do, I can see how it would be helpful.
Many times, I buy an album because I like 2 or 3 songs on it, but there may be songs on the album I don't care for. Adding a low rating to those would help me remember which songs to skip. My library is too large to take on that task now. I'm still working on getting lyrics for as many songs as I can.
when i mean properly ive seen people Just Rate every song 5 even if they dont like they just do it for looks..
I rate my songs...well, the ones I care enough to rate. I have a little smart playlist that pulls all the songs with 5 stars. I can just load that up and hit shuffle. Best radio station EVAR.
I have tons and tons of songs that aren't rated though, because I only sort of like them. Most of the songs that have ratings below 4 or 5 stars are on an album I otherwise like.

I like to listen to my music by albums, so I have all my albums rated. My favourite albums are rated 5*, and then I have a smart playlist collecting all 5* albums which I put on my iPhone.
I don't bother rating individual songs, don't really see the point.

Same here. What's the point of rating your music? If you bought it... that means at one time you liked it. But you do know it. Sometimes we like fast music... sometimes slow... sometimes soft... sometimes loud... sometimes happy... sometimes sad. I don't rate for the very reason that I would have to rate my music differently depending on how I felt at that moment.
I rate my most favorite songs five stars on my iPod and put them into a playlist for my iPhone so that I always have my most favorite songs on my phone. I also have another playlist on my phone that is just for songs that I have listened to on my iPod over the last year. I've made it for the last year because I don't play my iPod too often but it includes about 2000 songs.

5* my favourite songs, these don't get skipped, awesome songs
4* good songs ones I like but aren't absolute favourite songs.
3* ok songs. I like them alright, but they're not particularly standout
2* mostly the filler from albums. I own the whole album, and will sometimes listen to the whole album, but it's not a song I will go to.
1* the crap that I will never normally want to listen to, but otherwise would have a gap in an album / music videos that I don't want to get into my playlists / audiobooks / other things that I don't want to listen to in everyday situations but still want like christmas albums.
My iphone has everything 4* and 5*, and of the 3* stuff I have about a gig randomly selected by "last played(longest ago)" to keep a rotating mix on there.
I've rated about 4500 out of about 8500 songs so far...

5 stars - this is the cream of the crop! I would never skip these.
4 stars - great songs, but just not good enough for five stars.

1 star - the worst of them all

While I don't buy bad albums on purpose, sometimes a song just stands out in whatever direction and I don't want to end up with albums that look like a slice of swiss cheese. That, and sometimes a 2 star song in an otherwise great DJ mix set is easier to bear than a harsh transition if it's omitted completely.

This. Anything rated 4/5 goes into it. Makes shuffling a bit less hit and miss than when it's randomly selecting from 4000 songs.
There's another playlist for anything rated 1 star. I listen to everything on my iPod so when I plug it in to sync that playlist shows me the songs I thought were awful and I take them off my iPod/delete them from the library.
I haven't gotten into using the ratings. I use playlist to highlight preferences or set up mood or specific purpose mixes.

They all lead to my Smart Playlists, AKA, 5 stars automatically go into '5 Star Songs'. Same for 4 stars. 2 & 3 stars go into 3 stars. But, I don't rate 1 star. No point.
This is the same for iPhoto.

i rate mine just to help with different playlists. Sometimes I want to include "rated" ones and others no.

Yes i rate mine - i have a bit of a "system" going which helps keep everything organised:
5* - Favorite tracks which i never want to delete. Many of these go into smart playlists (eg 5* Madonna, 5* Bowie, 5* 80's, etc)
4* - Also good but don't always want to listen to
3* - Ok tracks
2* - Tracks i want to take off my iPod/iPhone after the next sync (but aren't so bad that i want to delete) and are therefore "unchecked" and so not synced the next time. Also includes duplicates or itunes purchases that i don't want delete, and this way they can always be added again.
1* - Tracks that i either want to delete (and would happily never hear again), or tracks that have tags the need editing, or missing artwork etc.
I find this system works and makes it easy to "weed-out" the crap and helps keep everything in order so i'm not constantly skipping tracks on my iPod. My library is pretty big (80gb+) so i need something.

To limit what I have on my iPhone I actually made an "iPhone" playlist and dragged my favorites to it.
Yeah I used to do this. But it's easier just to sync Top Rated, Recently Added then the artists where I know I want the whole album/s even if I don't want all of it on the Top Rated playlist.
