Who really bought the Air for the lightness?

Not hating on the Air, I really love the how thin it is and the design by Apple.

I'm curious on who really bought the Air because of the weight.
I FEEL it is just bragging rights, and you prob ONLY do email and web (FB) for work.
I know there are many factors and I would like to hear them. Also on ur daily travel/commute with your laptop.

I have a MBP 15" and a messenger bag.
In my bag: MBP / JumpDrive / iPhone sometimes / 2 folders perhaps / moleskine
I weigh 180 lbs and athletic build............This weight feels like nothing to me, and I feel im not the only one.

Parking Garage to Work with one elevator then length of floor.
Not once have I ever thought "gee, i wish someone else could carry my bag."

Only way it gets heavy is if I'm carrying a TON of other crap and my laptop is NEVER the first to be compromised.

Everyone has different needs. I travel primarily by motorcycle and don't use saddlebags. Lots of people in cities walk/take the subway or ride their bicycles.

The biggest reason I like it is the quality 11.6 screen,
just cant find that in other small laptops.

Lightness is fine but it would have been better IMO
with a larger battery , SD and HDMI,
even at the expense of some added weight.

Not sure the bottom needed to be tapered so much at the front
if they could have used that space towards extra battery?

I bought it because I have always wanted a Macbook Air, yet always bought Macbook Pro's.

1: Wanted something with SSD/Flash.
2: Best priced MBA's yet.
3: Don't need any more power than this.
4: Just love the new design.
5: Weight wasn't important as such, but more the form factor.

Could I have gotten away with a white macbook? yes. Could I have got more power for the same money with a MBP? yes. Am I glad I have gone for the new Macbook Air? Hell yes, bring it on.

I'm a big believer in the 'feel good' of a product, the macbook air has that in bucketloads.

Do you have to walk far while you are on campus for school or take the bus?

For myself, I'm a freelance writer, so I don't need a lot of raw processing power, but I have a lot of programs open to help me out, so the RAM is helpful. I have my laptop with me 24/7, and I'm often out and about all day - couple of hours in a coffee shop, couple of hours with employers/clients, walking to and from home at the beginning of the day/end of the day.

The difference in an Air vs. even a 13" MBP is a big one when your laptop's attached to you 24/7 and you need to be mobile.

Couldn't have said it better. This is so true. Apple really makes you happy, day in and day out, NOT just the first day of opening a product!

How about none of the above. I have a work laptop (PC based) that they won't let me install anything on and I travel 3/4 of the year on business. I'd like a thin, light personal laptop to carry along with my work laptop. I can't VM an image and run it on my personal machine because of the encryption they put on the work laptop.

No need to be cranky. I agree that the poll is kinda bad... not the poll itself but the options aren't general enough for most people to pick.

I chose "Just like the design / bragging rights for sure" but I'm definitely not about the bragging rights.

I like the form factor + functionality. Having had MBP's for years, the size really is an issue for me. I started out with a 17 powerbook, then a 15 macbook pro and finally with a 13 macbook pro (tried a netbook and it failed beyond).

So with this buying timeline, I'm one of those people who need a small, light computer that can do tasks that I don't need to be on a desktop machine.

I tried an iPad, but I still wasn't able to be as productive as I'd like (though it's great for consuming media for my needs).

Well my comment wasn't sarcastic in any way towards you but was blunt and to the point so please if your asking for information from me lose the sarcasm.

You ask, did we buy it for the lightness?

Answer: yes! Easy to carry while walking to classes and for my work because I move from place to place doing store checks and inventory management which requires me to carry the computer for 30 min or more scanning objects doing counts etc. so a heavy laptop becomes very cumbersome to hold using for that long.

Better poll answer choices would have possibly just been a yes/no answer.

For me its really just a case of personal preference and past experience of how I treat notebooks - been buying ultra-portables since 1999/2000 cos I find that at around 1 kilo I'll happily hand carry all day every day without giving it a second thought.

Much more than one kilo then I tend to stop and think whether to carry one with me or not.

e.g. By 1.5 kilos I find that I'll only carry if there's a reasonable chance I'll need it that day, and by time it hits 2 kilos I'm checking and making sure there's a job pre-booked that definitely needs me to have one with me that particular day.

My husband and I are very big tech people (and both engineers to boot), and now that we are in a very financially healthy place we are constructing our perfect computer setup. We will be ordering a maxed out 27" iMac to be our primary machine that we will use for maintaining documents, hobby photography, and light gaming. The air will be/is our browsing/on-the-go computer.

Don't forget that students tend to carry 20 to 30 pounds of text books. Any weight reduction is appreciated.

The weight was a big factor in my purchase.

I finally got back into photography and I bring my gear with me everyday to work. Even though I'll go days without taking a picture, I'd rather have my gear on me at all times for those unexpected moments wishing I had my gear with me. My gear and backpack alone is probably 10lbs (I'm working on trying to reduce the weight) and with my 15" MBP, that's a good 15+lbs on my back everyday. At this point, every pound helps

agreed. I'd say terrible choices. I can't answer yes to a single one of those. But I did buy it for the lightness.

A simple "yes" or "no" and then a message to elaborate in the comments. Instead you gave some really dumb answers to the question and so your results are going to suck because of it. Not my loss, more yours, if you wanted to know the answer to your question anyway. I feel you're going to get crap answers because of your choices.

I bought my MBA for the reason that it is significantly lighter that the 15" MBP I was using. I have 2 bad shoulders, recent surgery on 1 and soon on the other. Every ounce I can avoid carrying is a huge deal to me.

I travel a bit, but I spend lots of time at work going from meeting to meeting. For that the lightness of the Air would be nice, but I also need battery life so the 13" MPB would be better. Tough choices.
