OK.. I've ordered a MacBook Pro and will install the second GB of RAM, but will it really offer me much better performance than my 1GHz PB with 1GB of RAM?

I think my PB playing a 1080p X-Men 3 trailer says it all.. this was a low point but you have to laugh!!!!

One of my first MBP tests will be to run the same trailer... do you think it might win?

Just quietly...
HELL YEAH!!!!
I think it may hold it's own against the PB....

It will definitely be a lot faster, but it still won't quite meet the recommended system requirements for playing 1080p if that's what you're hoping for. The 1.83GHz PowerBook will still be .17GHz too slow. :p Here's Apple's recommended system requirements:

For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24 frames per second:
QuickTime 7 for Mac OS X:

* Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer; 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo or faster
* At least 512MB of RAM
* 128MB or greater video card

I did my own unofficial trailer test on my comp. It ran 2 different 1080p trailers simultaneously just fine, when I ran 3 at the same time, QT flickers and crashes.

For the $8000 you spent on your system, I could get 6 iMacs running in 1080p simultaneously without a crash.

First of all, I am so jealous of Malfoy's quad .

Second, let me say that I am really wanting a MB Pro as well :). I am really ineterested to know whether Photoshop runs as well/fast in Rosetta on a MB Pro as it does natively on my G4 Powerbook. When Photoshop and the Apple pro apps are native on the Intels, I'm gonna switch.

FWIW, my 17" Intel iMac (1.5GB RAM) runs the 1080p and 720p versions simultaneously at 24fps. It's the same setup as your MBPro w/be, so I'm thinking that maybe it might outperform your PB.

Isn't it obvious that the macbook pro is a lot faster than a powerbook G4 @ 1Ghz? What is this thread about?

This thread is about a soon to be MBP owner that has waited for 1 1/2 years and just can't wait any longer.... I know the MBP will blow the PB out of the water, what I was not ever expecting was to see my PB run at less than 1 frame/sec even for a moment.

Funny I have the same Computer as you a Quad 2.5 with 7800GT but I can handle up to 3 different 1080p trailers simultaneously at Full Frame rates. I can run 4 1080p trailers but thats when the FPS starts dropping. I have managed to open as many as Six 1080p files but then they all play at like 3-5 FPS, anything more than 6 and Quicktime crashes.

Actually I think your macbook pro will be significantly slower than your current powerbook.... why would Apple introduce faster products?

Man I hope someone is picking up my sarcasm....

The gpu in the Macbook Pro has h.264 hardware decoding so 1080p content is not gonna be a problem. The real plus is once ATI enables drivers for hardware "encoding" for the gpu. Their software system for the windows platform shows a 5x improvement in encoding speed, and it's not even totally hardware accelerated yet!!

That is very cool. You were able to repeat this a few times? I tried mine twice and suffered the '3rd trailer is a crash.'

Who thinks the Macbook Pro might handle multitasking better?

My current rig is the Oct Powerbook and it is **** for multitasking altivec or not. I am positive that having the Core Duo's two cores as well as other enhancements will make the MacBook a more pleasant experience. I can't even browse the web with firefox and have more than 10 tabs open or OS X slows to a crawl...
