Who thinks the new iMac can be coupled with a Macbook?

Hi all,

Just an idea came up, but seeming the new iMac can serve as an external display for macbooks, do you think you could couple the two as in effectively having the two computers working on the same job?


Not sure if i'm clear on my thoughts, but just something that came to mind, coz it would be a waste to buy an iMac for just its display if i already have a macbook pro. It would be nice if i could couple the two to work together.

Don't know if you read the whole ting, but having such an idea seems to me that you simply don't have any clue ... HOW should they work together? The iMac is then just a simple display. Not more.

Basically, no.
Even enterprise grade clustered servers only function as a single entity logically, in practise each server has it's own users and own programs running, which appear as a single system to the end user. Apps that run cross cluster have to be specially written to deal with communicating across the cluster, handling users, sharing workloads, sharing data/disk information.
So if you wanted, you can encode a DVD on one computer and render an image on another, and have lo-tech (manual) distribution of tasks, but you wont get both computers to work on the render or encode simultaneously/together.
In home use, the only clustered software you'll be running is SETI and folding@home.
