as the title reads, Who upgraded from ATV 2 to ATV3? and what did u do with your ATV 2?

I have an ATV2, use it every night , love it.

i dont see a reason to buy the ATV3 as it has no new features other than 1080p.

can u convince me to get it?

If you want 1080p or have a lot of 1080p content it is worth it. You can sell your ATV2 for $60 or so dollars. They are on Apple refub for something like $75 now or maybe less.

If you are happy with 720p there is no reason to upgrade at all right now.

Really depends on your existing media and streaming content. For me I couldn't see the point to upgrade, I do not have BR rips and I am okay with 720p. When Apple adds more compelling features to the latest gen I'll upgrade.

For me, it comes down to increased processing power. I plan on using it to stream my collection of 1080p BR rips, and will move the ATV2 to my bedroom so me and my wife can access our movie collection, netflix etc. Another reason is because I'm one of those guys that can actually "really" tell the difference between 720 and 1080. I have to have 1080p!! I also figure that once the devs get their units, they will be busy exploiting this new upgrade, and will open the door for more possibilities. Technology is always going to be just one big hobby IMHO. I'll get more than my $99.00 worth just playing with it, and jailbreaking and un-jailbreaking it. What are rainy days for anyway!

I may upgrade to ATV3 for it's ability to output 1080p, but I want to see comparisons between the 2 and 3 before I make the jump. If the 1080p rips look the same on both the 2 and 3, then there's not much reason to upgrade, even if you own a 1080p TV.

Then again I could upgrade and move the ATV2 to a different room. It's tempting.

Absolutely. At times there can be too much focus on resolution, but people forgot that a movie streamed online can be 1080p but yet look sub-par to a Blu-Ray film in the same resolution but yet sports a much higher bit-rate. The codec and container plays a huge role too.

So if 1080P movies are simply just larger but don't sport a higher bit-rate then you might find the difference from 720P movies on iTunes to be diminutive.

I have ordered the 3, but I'm not expecting much true 1080p content to appear overnight. Upscaled 720? Yep, but it won't look like the real thing.

Over time. more titles and services will become available. I like the new interface as well, although it took me a while to work out where things were.

One gripe...Although Apple have updated the "Remote" app, they are supplying the same old one with the 3 ( AT least my confirmation has a picture of the old one, and I've heard nothing about s redesign) Apart from that, I was buying the new iPad anyway so did both at the same time.

I was going to get a new apple tv anyways so upgraded at the same time. I am putting my "2" down stairs in my workout room.

Ditto. After the software update, atv2 is able to stream high profile h.264 1080p mp4s without a hitch. Woohoo! Now I can just move this to the bedroom where I have a 720p tv

How long does it take to buffer? Are you wired or wireless? Did you convert using Handbrake or extract the MP4 from the MKV file?

Handing the ATV2 to my parents, as their TV is 720p. Perfect fit.

This is what I'm doing with the v2 that I am replacing in my living room. My other v2 will remain in my bedroom as the TV is only 720p and I see no other compelling reason to upgrade it at this time.

I have the ATV2 and a 720p TV. I bought it within 14 days so can return it for the ATV3. Would it benefit me at all to get the ATV3, or just stick with my ATV2?

I ordered the 3 but of course still do not have it yet, just like everyone else. My kids watch their shows on the ATV2 every day, between netflix instant, youtube, and our iTunes video library. So our current unit will stay in service until the new one is installed.

After that, meh, don't really care. Probably eBay. My parents in law have a 720p TV, maybe I'll give it to them.

Wow I guess I'm lucky. The day the Apple TV 3 was announced I sold my Apple TV 2 on craigslist for 80$. Within two hours of putting the listing up I already had over 6 offers. I initially asked for 70$ but given the high demand I told some of the people interested they would have to make a better offer to get bumped to the front of the queue. The wining bid was 80$. The next morning the Apple TV 2 was exchanged for cash by 9:00am. Couldn't have been an easier experience.

I have an ATV2 in my room and use it ALOT, i would have to move it around the house from my room to downstairs living room when we wanted to watch a tv show or movie, so now i bought the ATV3 for downstairs. :)

I have 3 ATV2s upstairs and just bought 1 ATV3 for a new basement theater I have under construction. The problem is I will at some point have to upgrade the other 3 if I want to start ripping Blurays at 1080p instead of 720p which is kind of the point of the new device. I don't want to be unable to watch my 1080p rips on the other 3 so I am kind of stuck, I knew this would happen when the ATV2 came out at 720p only. I didn't order 4 right away only because I want to see how the new ATV3 performs at 1080p with high quality Handbrake rips before I plunk down another $300 but I assume it will do well.

sold my ATV2 on Craigs List for $80 a couple days before the announcement.

true 1080p output was worth the $20 upgrade to ATV3

how much did u sell it for?

Thinking about upgrading.. All my movies have been compressed to 720 via handbrake and if I do upgrade I'm not sure If I would re-do all the movies again, took me a longgg time to get it this way.

We'll see tho, maybe eventually

Upgraded to the 3 and jailbroke my 2. It's currently at $102 on ebay and ends in a couple days, so it is basically paying for my upgrade to the 3.
