Who uses 56k (dial-up) still?

I still see the ol' "56k warning" on some sites and usually chuckle at that. How many of you guys still use the ol' modem?
EDIT: Dammit I meant this to be a poll.

1) I use 56k still.
2) DSL
3) Cable

i work weekends at a large pc retailer and i seriously get 2 or 3 people a each weekend that i talk to that still use dial up :eek:
 
I guess I will answer as a poll--I have cable--and have actually had the same account since 2000--so dial-up is just a faint memory for me.

I normally use a 44kb dialup connection.
It was only 16kb a few weeks ago until the phone lines were upgraded and now have speedy 44kb connections. (Trust me, 44kb IS speedy compared to 16 :L )
 
My grandparents still use dial-up. They can't get DSL but the cable line stops right past there house and they refuse to get cable. I guess they just don't want to pay for it. Every time i go there i feel like pulling my hair out when gramps asks me to show him how to do something on the internet.
 
When I travel to Kenya for work purposes I used to use dial-up until I installed an internet connection in the office and put it on a wireless router simply for the purpose of syncing mail folders and saving stuff to the server which takes forever... its quite bad because i pay 8,000 Kenyan Shillings per month that is around £60, luckily my company only requires me to go for a week every two months. However i have been forced to use dial up in kenya when there are many people using the 128Kbps connection. I still carry the apple usb modem in my bag incase of an emergency...
 
i do technical support and you'd be surprised. a lot of people in the boonies can't get it, and then there's just cheap people, or people who use the internet so rarely they're not willing to pay more that $15 a month.

my uncle lives in a small town (i mean SMALL, population: 43) in missouri and he says his dial-up connection there is faster than the cable connection he had when he lived in las vegas, haha.
 
I've had cable since early 2003. Dial-up here is such a joke. When I had it my speed would rarely get above 10kbit/s.
 
According to the latest six-monthly ISP survey, 45% of NZers do not have broadband. Of course, the numbers may be different in other countries.

Me? Cable that's split between about 400 apartments. Fastest I usually get is 50 kb/s. I max out at about 300 kb/s when everyone's gone for break and we're all that's left.

Much faster than the 25 kb/s DSL I got back home.

Sometimes I think people who measure their internet speed in MB/s and still complain of it being slow once in a while really don't appreciate how fast their internet speeds are enough...

I wouldn't say happy. But it's the best I can get. I get ~150 kB/s DL, and it's still noticeably slower than ~80kB/s DSL when browsing the web (because of the high latency of the satellite connection). After the initial delay, downloading larger files works great. And there is an explicit monthly download limit (depending on your package, mine is ~16GB).

Weather is occasionally a problem. And I believe they provide a dial-up number to use in those situations. I haven't had to use it yet though.
 
Well, I'm on Comcast now, though I wish my neighborhood would get wired for FiOS. I only finally got my parents to get rid of dial-up in June 2007. And they only did that as a ploy to get my sister to live at home and because my grandma had just died so they had the money for it.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, my dial up is really slow. Anyways, forgot what i was going to say because it took so long. If i remember, ill post again. lol
 
I had dial-up until 2004.

EDIT: Ah, after a bit of research, we use a line-of-sight wireless provider. Of course we pay for a 768 KB/ connection, yet don't usually exceed 128 KB/s. :(
 
On a foray for work, we had sneaker-net 2.0. You had to walk over to another tent to get to the satellite connection which was rigged up to one computer. We quickly learned which companies made good thumb drives or just how robust an iPod was.

That was a fiasco.
 
i use dsl but my one of my aunts switched to high speed and cost lik 500 because shes in the country the other just stayed with dial up since she didnt want to pay $500 for a dish and such so since her pc 56k modem doesnt work i gave her my imac g3 just for mail and browsing the web possibly my cousin might use his ipod shuffle on it.
