Shocker smartphone users like bigger screens, market share responds accordingly

kantar-august-2012-phone-usage-by-size.jpg

There's been a trend towards big smartphones. Sometimes, really big. Even so, concerns have persisted that the cart is driving the horse -- that customers are buying big phones because that's what's available, not because they have a preference. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech might not put that issue to bed once and for all, but its latest study suggests that there's at least some appeal to all that extra glass. Among Android phones sold in the past three months across eight countries, 29 percent of them had a screen larger than 4.5 inches. Their owners were unsurprisingly more active as well, using the internet and watching videos more often than those whose phones have more modest displays.

Market share might be following suit. Throughout the countries Kantar is tracking, Android still has roughly half or more of the market, ranging from 46.8 percent in Brazil to a staggering 86.8 percent of Spain. In Europe alone, it was up by just over a fifth from a year ago. We know iOS is taking a beating outside of the US as a result. Before anyone calls the trend irreversible, however, remember that we're on the edge of an unpredictable period: we know some mobile fans have been holding out for a new iPhone, and all the apparent rumors have Apple choosing a bigger screen that might satisfy some outstanding gripes with screen sizes. We're also anticipating at least a few Windows Phone wildcards that could shake up the status quo and make this a three-horse race.

The only people that prefer small screens are those iFans in denial. They claim they love the tiny screen, but they say that simply because they have no choice.

I don't think that's true for everyone. Some people really do prefer a smaller screen.

Agreed. I really like the size of my iPhone and am viewing the new one with apprehension. Until I get to hold one in my hand, I am doubtful that I will like the larger size better than the current one.

However, I recognize that others would and do prefer a larger screen size than the current iPhone and that's just fine; to each his own. People that like the larger screen sizes can get any variety of Android or Windows Phones and be perfectly happy, just as I am with my iPhone.

I'd like it if Apple creates the new size and also keeps the current one as well, but alas, I doubt they would do that at all.

So it's not really an issue of cost because how long has apple been dropping its previous models to an affordable level? I don't think anyone would argue any iPhone is better than a cheap economic android.

Not surprising at all.

When I moved from a 3.5 Inch android to the Galaxy Nexus , for the first day i thought it was a bit big...but then I loved it. Now I'm not content with the 4.65 inch screen and am looking at the Note 2 (or similar sized) phone for my next phone.Nowadays whenever I try a 3.5/4 inch phone I really cant get used to the tiny screens..and just loath the lack of real-estate.

Phones have become much more than just phones...they are now media consumption devices. I spend hours browsing/watching movies/music-videos/playing games on my phone every-month when i commute/have some delay/wait for someone else.

The best part about the Larger android phones, and the even larger note2 type androids is that they negate the need to carry a tablet/laptop around on long journeys. I can easily slide the phone into my pockets when not in use and be truly "mobile" as opposed to carrying a backpack/bag/holding a tablet on my hand when traveling.Add Android OS's ability to read/use any type of file-format...and the drag and drop type of file transfer from any computer...I do not see a need to buy a tablet at all.

I actually had the link posted from Engadget but then i didnt think posting links to other sites was allowed here so i took it off. I know some forums dont like it and couldnt remember if this was one of them. No big deal.

Dont know why someone would think i made that up myself with the statistic pages i showed but who knows.

I don't prefer 3.5 inches, I would actually like a 4.3-4.5 inch screen. Nevertheless, screen size is not a compelling factor for me to switch platforms at the moment, except for Windows Phone, maybe. But if Apple refuses to increase the iPhone's screen size beyond 4" and Android matures enough, I would easily jump ship.

Apple really is missing out on a nice chunk of market share by stubbornly sticking with the small screen. My sister who is the least tech savvy person in the world completely ruled out the iphone since she bought her first smartphone 2yrs ago. She just renewed and bought a new phone, yep no iphone because the screen is too small.

I was the opposite. I thought I like the 3.5" screen for better portability, until I tried a GNex for myself. I'll sacrifice a bit of portability for the increased screen real estate.

Yeah, the 4.65 inch screen on the nexus is such a great size, especially with the onscreen buttons. Its like 4.3 when you do regular apps, and when watching movies or videos it hides the buttons and you get the full 4.65 to use.

I don't prefer a smaller screen, but I do prefer a longer battery life without the need to cart around a charged spare. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a larger screen that didn't come with punishing battery life, the S3 included. So for that reason, I'm hoping the iPhone 5 creates a happy compromise for me.

I bought a 3.3" smartphone because I wanted an small screen, does that makes me an iFan in denial?

Be honest, you have one of those calenders that gives you a word of the day and you found a way to use it.

Haha, unfortunately no. I remember really weird vocab words, that one was thrown around a couple years ago by my AP English teacher in my high school days.

Just because you don't like the iPhone screen size doesn't mean nobody else does either.

There are people who don't wanna lug around a phone the size of a tablet.
There are people with smaller hands who don't wanna wrestle with a 5" phone.
There are people who like to use their phone single handed and like to be able to reach the whole screen using their thumb.

There are a few phones that I'd say are in the verge of tablet territory (Dell Streak, Galaxy Note, LG Intuition e.t.c) but it does mistyfy me when people say the likes of the Galaxy S III, HTC Titan and Galaxy Nexus are like tablets.

To me they are just phones with screens larger than the iPhone and there is no "ligging" involved.

How hard is it to identify a tablet and a phone?

The s3 has better battery life than the 4s especially when comparing the CDMA variants. Not sure why you thought otherwise.

A larger screen doesn't automatically mean extra screen real estate. A 4.3 screen with 800x480 resolution has LESS screen real estate than the 3.5 iphone 4. I expected people on a tech forum to know this. I would definitely have simply said larger screen talking to my non-techie sister. But I guess these days one must accommodate the lowest common demoninator.
