I’m considering buying a 2018 iPad after selling my 2017 MacBook. The Air 3 is better, but for my needs the cost saving for the base model seems more suitable.

What do you use yours for and hows it going? Do you find the base model is doing more than fine?

Regular (base) models are perfect for me. In my case, both the 5th and 6th generations run plenty fast and smooth. The non-laminated display is ideal. I too look at value and cost saving, and the Pro and even Air models aren't worth it to me. It'll be interesting to see what the anticipated 7th generation brings, expected to be released later this year (which you might also consider as the latest model).

Typical consumption stuff. Surfing, forums, video streaming, email, comics, ebooks. To be honest, performance-wise, I don't notice much of a difference between the 2018 A10 iPad and the 2017 A10X iPad Pros. When I'm on the A9/A10-based iPads, I don't really start thinking "I wish this was faster" like I do whenever I have to work with HDD-based PCs. Granted, I leave ProMotion disabled on my Pros.

I am using this iPad model. I use it either for work related stuff (I like to sketch process improvement ideas for work or to take handwritten notes) or for personal fun (ProCreate). In terms of CPU I have no issues. I don't notice it being slow but then again I also don't do intensive stuff on it. In terms of RAM I do have some issues. Tabs and apps are being reloaded constantly. This is something that annoys me. However I think that in general this is supposed to be iOS feature (so called memory optimization which I dislike) and I assume it happens on iPad Pros too.

This is the only issue I have with this iPad. I don't think that most people care about this in general and I assume maybe most iOS users are used to it. I am a new iOS user and I associate such behavior with lagging because it makes me less efficient.

Is the screen okay with the lack of anti reflective display? I was thinking of putting a matte screen protector on it anyway. This might help while using it outside?

The 7th generation iPad might be released soon. I would wait.

True, but not until October. If it takes until then to sell my Mac, then I might meet that date but I personally don't want to hold out too long. I did this in March with the Air 3 which I eventually bought (now sold) and all it did was make the buying choice harder! Lol

This is part the reason why I'm going from Mac to iPad. These 'outside of work' tasks seem much more fun and relaxed on iPad. There's also less pressure on saving time and 'performing' in conventional terms. With the base model, at it's low price I feel even a year (or two) of good (even if not 'best') performance seems still.. great value.

Just curious... why do you disable ProMotion, seems nice to enjoy all the same? Do you switch devices often and notice it a lot if it's enabled?

The 6th gen is a great tablet. Its plenty fast and the non laminated display is a non issue. I enjoy the pencil support alot. They are basically giving them away these days. 249 for a 32 at Worst Buy.

Yes, the price is incredibly low. Lowest I can get an Air for here is £430, but £270 for the base model. Still a huge saving.

Do you ever do CAD work? If so, recommend any apps for it? I'm hoping the RAM isn't such a big deal because iOS makes doing one thing as a time pretty easy meaning it's hard to stretch it. Unless there's a lot of tabs open and you need them waiting whilst going between other apps which cause the former to be purged. But I fully get that phenomenon and understand the base will comparatively be 'worse than' the more pricey models

Good point! It is reflective so yes buy matte screen protector. I cannot find such easily in my country and I do have issues with the iPad when it comes to this.

Sorry I don't do CAD work but I have seen AutoCad in Appstore. When I was in university I had to do CAD work and we used AutoCad and CadStar so I am suggesting to check AutoCad. I have not found CadStar in Appstore. Also you might need to pay something for AutoCad. I think that there are some in app purchases.

Actually my usual case is the following - I am writing say a post in forum and then I chat with my friends. Sometimes just because I switched for 1 minute to skype, the tab with the forum is reloaded and my post is gone and I need to start from scratch. This is for me as an end user is a quite annoying bug.

But this is not something that most people complain about so maybe it's something in my usage. I know for sure that if I had to rely only on this iPad for stuff like that this RAM issue would make me go insane. So I mention it to people as a potential issue that they need to check against their usage.

As always, no one knows.. Let's wait for the 10. September event, maybe we're lucky and they'll introduce new iPads there.

That's true. I've read rumours about a 10.2 budget model. Have there been any about a new Pro?

Mine works great for light use such as media consumption, emails and surfing. I have tried editing video on it as well and that works fine too. Great value for money iPad which can probably do 90-95% of what Pro models can do.

On it's own I don't notice it's non-laminated display, but for example if put side by side to a new Air 3 you will see it is less vibrant and not quite as sharp. Again this doesn't affect day to day use, just something I noticed in the Apple store when comparing side by side.

At this point I wouldn’t buy any iOS device unless it has at least 3gb of RAM. The screen and 2gb of RAM is why I returned my 2018 iPad.

The screen was quite bad and the constant reloading of apps was very annoying. I returned it for a 10.5 Pro and couldn’t be happier.

I made up my mind personally on Sunday, went for the Air 3 with 256GB storage. The iPad 2018 was ruled out to me as it had a very reflective screen (once it's brought up it's hard to not notice, especially in outdoor use), the lower RAM (some owners say they notice the refreshes), the 32GB storage was too small, and the 128GB is still okay, but nowhere near 'exceptional value' as the 32GB is with special offers etc. Plus a YouTube video comparison showed it was dropping frames in Fortnite. I'm no gamer, but have gotten into that lately and it'd be nice to have full high settings. True Tone was also a nice addition, as in bright sunlight it can go that extra mile to improve readability.

I might eat my words depending how the rumoured October even goes... but for now, happily on Air 3. Thanks for all your replies!

In what way is a non-laminated screen ideal? It's the absolute worst part of a pretty darned good iPad.

I can't make sense of this guys logic. I think what he means is that the iPad 2018 is best for him (personally). But he seems to be citing specs that are inferior and then arguing they are better than the superior technologies in other, more expensive models?!

It's subjective. I had both and prefer the regular iPad display. It has an equallly high res Retina display without the issues constantly raised in threads here on this forum. The huge price differential seals the deal for me.

White spot issue seems primarily on Pro 10.5 (laminated). There's also more reports of touchscreen unresponsiveness on Pro 10.5, 11 and 12.9.

I like the laminated displays better but I gotta say, they're much worse fingerprint magnets compared to the non-laminated screens. On one hand, you've got reflections, on the other hand fingerprint haze. :p

When we're talking about what's best for you, that's subjective. But comparing technology is objective.
Which issues? I'm unaware.
It's definitely not the worst choice for me! It's a fantastic iPad.
For me the price jump wasn't big enough. But when it comes to Air 3 > Pro, that price jump sealed my deal.

If it's best for you, then it's best for you. Wouldn't ever try to argue that. But if you're saying 'what's the superior technology' that's a factual situation. My Air 3 is inferior to the Pro, but best option for me too, so I get what you're saying. But if I come on here and start saying it's better than a Pro, I'll be in trouble! lol

I like the laminated screen for outdoor use. But it's more the anti-reflective coating I value!
