who's staying on el capitan and why

i just wanted to ask who is staying on OS X el capita. instead of upgrading to sierra. do you plan on upgrading in the future or are you holding out for some reason or if your on an earlier version that applies too. for me the reason is that my mac pro 1,1 can't go beyond el capitan yet atlas until they get a patch out for the boot.efi and thats if they get a patch out but my laptop MacBook pro 09 unofficially is running it and my other desktopp mac mini 2014 is running it so yea share your reasons here

Personally, I don't think I will upgrade to Sierra.

I don't use iOS. I use Chrome. I don't use the Photos app (at least for now). My Mac is also a MBAir from 5 years ago (no metal support). I use whatsapp, chrome instead of Safari, transmission, vlc, spotify, itunes but no Apple music, Plex, MalwareBytes, Google keep instead of notes, Dropbox instead of anything iCloud (besides my email domain and mail app), MSOffice suite, endnote, Texas Instruments software and calendar.

Because of this, there's literally 0 things that Sierra has that would improve my (already stellar) experience. We will still get security updates.

I think I will only upgrade when the new filesystem is available. All of my upgrades (started with Lion, so Lion - Mountain Lion - Mavericks - Yosemite - El cap) were awesome, and I trust Apple 100%. Because of this, and because I'm pretty certain that 10.12.0 won't be faster on my machine than 10.11.6, I see no reason to update at this time.

Since Leopard I have waited until at least the 10.x.3 (or later) release to upgrade to the next OS. By that time, my 3rd party s/w and h/w has had the time to be updated and most major bugs are finally gone. I think I waited until 10.11.4 before I moved to El Cap.

I just tried to update my wife's iMac to Sierra last night and it isn't compatible. Question, it is running El Capitan so what is so different / special with Sierra that it won't install on a 2008 iMac? Things that are supported like BLE should just not be enabled. I can't think what would be so different between the two except they are always trying to force you to upgrade your hardware each year by changing the models that can't be updated. Same thing with the iPad 3, runs 9.3 but won't update to 10.

Sierra is basically El Capitan with a few extra functionalities related to iPhones, iPads, and cloud services. There appears to be no performance upgrades, no better hardware optimization. I don't own any Apple phones or tablets, so no reason to "upgrade". I think it's best to keep the version of OSX the machine was built for, unless a compelling reason to move on exists. El Capitan works really well on this late 2015. I am staying.

Will prob update to Sierra but not til .2/.3. Wanna wait for more stability. While some of the features would be cool to use right now, it's not enough of a reason to upgrade at this point.

What is wrong with you? Your iPad is old, as far as mobile tech goes. Same for your iMac. Why would they release an update for it, when no new features could be enabled?

They sold you a great machine, and will keep updating it as far as security goes for at least 10 years since release. Why just not keep using it? Who is forcing you to update anything? Why do lazy people that don't read the requirements always complain without any reason?

Apple is free to do what they please, as well. It's up to you to make your decisions based on your experience.

It might not seem fair that a mid-2009 Mac and mid-2007 Mac hit the upgrade wall at the same time but that's the way it goes. 2006 MacBook Pros are only (officially) able to run 10.6.8 maximum but my mid/late 2007 MacBook Pro runs 10.11.6. It came with 10.4.9!

If one is truly interested in the reasons the devices are cut off at a certain point I'm sure the details can be found with a decent search.

El Capitan seems to be a stable, smooth and fast iteration of the OS.

I can understand why some folks might choose to stick with it for a while.

As a matter of fact, I still use 10.8.5 as my "main OS" (2012 Mac Mini), for that very reason.

Also something to be aware of…
Numerous reports that (at least for now) Sierra is having problems with "scaled resolutions" on larger displays...

So, exactly what I said. What is your point?

His 2009 iMac ends with El Cap, that will have security updates for the next 2 or 3 years, making it 10 years. And he can keep using it just fine. No one is forcing anything.

It's just laziness to inform themselves.

Same here.

I tried Sierra. The Photos people recognition got stuck at about 20%. Karabiner doesn't work. Siri is amusing for about two minutes. I don't use all the other new featurettes. When the new file system is available I'll consider upgrading... when I have read at least 50 times here on the forums that it doesn't wreck everything. Until then I have no reason to upgrade really.

El Cap is like Windows 7 version of Microsoft. Very stable at 10.11.6 any no real reason to upgrade in my book. Apple forcing a lot of hardware off the cliff means 10.11.6 will be a major OS for users for a few years, so will get support from developers longer than Yosemite or ML might. In other words, there's a barrier to Sierra entry for a lot of Mac users so it'll end up being as prominent as SL was.

ya I'm with ya there. my 1,1 pro is stuck on el cap unless the y get sierra patched onto it as its not as simple as the old boot.efi of old. i wish it was but it isn't and anyways there isn't a lot of ground breaking features to justify the upgrade i do have my mac mini upgraded as its a test mechine but the pro will be fine on sierra i presume ofr a many a days. lets hope next year is a better os.
