Whats so bad about 30Hz? Web, photo editing and other non video/game related tasks would it matter?

If you don't want to have problems with eyes ... than drop the idea, just invest couple of hundreds more now (instead on rehabilitation) or if you can ...

... wait with the purchase until Apple "reinvent" the 4k display :) just like me ... (and prepare 1.5 - 2k).

There are some other threads here discussing this in considerable detail. Some people report that cursor movement is jittery or lags the mouse. Others say no problem. Dragging objects and positioning them exactly could be more difficult if this is the case.

I'm considering the Seiki 50" HDTV which has this 30 Hz limitation, so I'm interested in learning what others have seen before making a buy decision. I also need to drag and position lots of objects in engineering drawings.

I don't know if it's worth buying a 30 hz 4k right now when in a year, you'll probably be able to get a normal 60 hz for the same price.

I know this has been a topic before but have things changed somehow in the meantime? Regarding the 24" dell.
Does it work properly on the nMP with MST and in retina mode?
I wanted to get an old TB display for the time being, but if the retina mode works it might be an option since it would give enough screen real estate because it would display a 1080p video at its actual size inside of after effects...

I would like to save everyone here the trouble that I went through,

It is a nice monitor, but there is no proper scaling like on the retina macbook pros, so what you get is just 1920X1080 HIPDI, which at 24inch, does not add more working space for you, it is just like a normal 24inch monitor (except sharper). I also have a 27" iMac which although slightly less sharp, I can get more working space on it.

For the price, working with a 30hz monitor is really a PITA. There is a lag, so it isn't responsive enough for painting or photo editing on it.

And I noticed a strange phenomena, because it is so sharp, I found myself staring closer to the monitor because of it, anyone else with this experience ?

It might be for people with slight short sightedness:

on a less sharp monitor, moving any closer won't make the image sharper,
but
on a very sharp monitor, moving closer will get you a sharper image and you will subconsciously move close when you are looking at the monitor.

I just processed the return, will be looking at a 27" or 30"
Question, can a Mac Pro support the 30inch with my GTX670 ?

The Seiki I'm considering is 50" and costs about $800. I'm not so sure there will be anything at that size capable of 60 Hz in the near future without regard to cost.

But it would give you more working space in retina mode cause it will render videos smaller within the UI of let's say after effects.

The new 28" Dell only accepts input at 30Hz. :( Some of us were holding out hope of it supporting 60Hz via MST over DisplayPort, however it's now confirmed that 30Hz is it.

As for the 24" Dell UHD monitor -- UP2414Q -- it does not currently work with the nMP at 60Hz. I have tried it and subsequently returned the display. I now wish I would have kept it for my HP workstation and will re-order when a good coupon appears. Presumably this display will eventually work with the nMP, we just don't know for sure when or how the compatibility will be fixed. It could come via a firmware update for the display or it could come with improved drivers from Apple/AMD. In fact, the latest 10.9.2 developer seed released a few days back has more video driver updates in it, specifically for the nMP, and I have not tried with that release.

With OSX 10.9.1, the display worked properly at 30Hz and 24" is a good size for running HiDPI mode for a 1080p equivalent desktop with "retina" support. However, for 60Hz operation, the monitor did not work. We had a mess of garbled colors and couldn't make out much of anything. With the 10.9.2 beta seed, the monitor worked properly on the primary stream side (right) and the left hand side of the display showed sparkles, flickers and drop-outs. It seemed to be a timing issue. There has subsequently been a new 10.9.2 beta release, which I mentioned, but I have not heard if anything was fixed for this display and I have already returned the one I originally purchased.

I regret the return now, as I'm sure this will all get sorted and I do have other ways to use the display if not. Unfortunately, I let the 28" Dell influence my return decision and I was unaware of the 30Hz limitation on that display at the time. So I feel like a dope at the moment. Ha!

There are reports floating about that the 32" Dell UP3214Q also has the same incompatibility issues with the nMP, I have not seen or tried this display. I have however worked with the ASUS PQ321Q display and it works properly at both 30 and 60 Hz. As does the Sharp PK-321, which Apple is selling. The ASUS is simply a re-badged Sharp anyway. Personally, I've found the 32" size to be awkward for UHD 3840x2160 use. It's too big of a monitor to run in HiDPI mode for a 1080p workspace and there is inadequate support in current OS's (Windows or OSX) to make use of the display at native resolution.

The 32" 4K monitors are nice however as a secondary display where we can work on photo retouching or as a playback/view monitor for UHD video editing. I think the "killer app" for Hi DPI displays will arrive later when we have better support for HDMI 2.0 and the upcoming DisplayPort 1.3. I would love a 5120x3200 30-inch or a 5120x2880 27-inch "retina" display. That would give us a nice balance of screen real-estate with sharp text and other display elements and the ability to use 1:1 pixels in apps that can benefit -- photo / video work, CAD, etc..

This! I'm really wondering when we will se something like that in the wild!

What qualifies as "good"? My definition of "good" is 60hz IPS @4k; likely several years before any good displays get near $1000, let alone $600.

Yep, I have about the same definitions. I know it will be at least a year or two. I am hearing a lot of complaints about how OS X handles 4k right now. So, either way I would wait until 10.10.

My next big purchase is doing to be a new Drobo, my 2nd gen is just too damn slow now. A new monitoring isn't a high priority for me right now. Sure, I would love one, but ya it can wait a bit.

A shame I don't live in the US, I'm trying to sell my Drobo 5D and can't find a buyer over here in Germany, I guess it's too much of a niche product for ebay.

Guess I'll have to wait on the LG Thunderbolt 2 displays. Those super wides look sweet.
Yeah that ultra wide 21:9 is pretty impressive. It's only a 1440p though. The 31" LG "real 4k" 4096x2160 will be the one to get once they release a price for it.

Amazon does have the consumer Seiki 39" UHD (30hz) @ $379 used which is basically same as the Dell.

Hmmm, how much are you asking for it ? Also how much use has it had ?

It's been used for 12 months exactly now, but still has 2 years of warranty left.
It has 5x1TB sea gate drives taken from a promose pegasus r6 and a crucial msata ssd 64gb in it.

I don't think you could use it due to power supply issues though? I'm not sure about it though.

It's being sold empty for around 600€ so I would likely ask 700€ for it.

The power supply could be an issue. But beyond that, they cost less in the states. Thanks anyway :D

Hmm... not so sure. I just plugged my new UP2414Q into a nMP at the Apple store, and at 4k resolution it was only running at 30fps.

Sadly, this is true... but I'm holding on to my UP2414Q on the hope that the 60hz issue will get resolved. I was able to get it in 1080i mode at the Apple store, and it seemed to be fine.
