I have a week 40 iPhone, and was told I would need blackra1n to jailbreak. Since this is a tethered jailbreak, if I turn off my phone, I would need to connect it to a computer to reboot it. Yet, I've turned my phone off multiple times, and I can reboot just fine.

A tethered jailbreak is possible for an iPhone 3GS with newer iBoot, but I wasn't aware that any tools were released yet. Do you have a 3GS or a 3G and if it's a 3GS, what version of iBoot are you running?

You probably don't have the new iBoot then.

OP never replied which model he has.

For all we know he has a 3G which doesn't have the new bootrom.

Week 40 16g 3gs. I never checked the boot rom and jailbroke with blackra1n. To my surprise, when I rebooted, there was no need to tether. When I let the battery run down to nothing, there was no need to tether to reboot. I was lucky and beat the odds, unless the odds were on my side and not too many 40's had the new boot rom. Either way, it makes me happy.

Some 3GS phones got the new bootrom in the 37th week. Depends on which factory.
