I just bought the dell U2713HM, which has 2560X1440 native resolution. I am using a late 2012 Mac Mini. I am using the DVI port in the monitor (which supports this resolution), the dual-link DVI cable that came with the monitor, the Apple DVI-D to Mini Display port adaptor, and plugging it into the MDP on my Mac Mini. The only thing I can think of is that the Apple adaptor does not support 2560 X 1440. Is that the reason why?

Do I need to buy a display port to mini display port cable instead?

You need to buy a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter, as the MDP to DVI adapter does not support that high a resolution.

Link is in below quote:

Mini DisplayPort (MDP) / Thunderbolt
Mini DisplayPort is the current digital standard on all current Macs to transfer video to an external display or TV. It has been introduced in 10/2008 with the release of the Unibody MacBook and MacBook Pros and has gradually been adopted on all other Macs.
MDP is capable of transmitting video, and since 2010, audio too. MDP is a miniaturised version of DisplayPort. It is also license free and can support resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600, which Mini DVI and Micro DVI are not able to do.
Since 2011, all Macs come with a Thunderbolt port, which is meant for fast data transfer and also as means to connect to an external display device to mirror or extend the Mac's screen.

Also of interest: "What is "Mini DisplayPort"? Is it an industry-standard? How is it different from or better than Mini-DVI and Micro-DVI?"

I'm using an HDMI / Display Port mini cable on my Dell, and all is well. Me thinks the Dell monitor you have has this HDMI input.

How do you get more than 1920 x 1200 pixel via HDMI? I guess it has to do with HDMI 1.3?

Should automatically recognize it, or one can go to System Preferences > Display.

You can check your displays Menu as well to check if the Input Source is correct.

Go with the mini DP to DP. I'm using this with my samsung monitor and no issues. Cable from Monoprice too.
