Hi, yesterday I bought a device that requires me to grant it access to Location Permissions "due to restrictions on Apple and Android phones where they block apps from connecting to Wi-Fi networks unless it is switched on." I also need to enter network id and password to their app. Why Apple imposes such restriction for device to connect to wifi network? Is this normal? How many percent of iOS Apps require such access?

What app? I have never seen an app that requires you to enter network id and password. Are you sure it was the app doing that and not iOS itself so that the device could access the WiFi?

uHoo app. Inside the app, they asked me to enter network id and the password.

ah, it's associated with a device that requires WiFi access so the device needs the info to log in. As to Apple requiring location access, this article doesn't mention that at all -

I have not given it the password. I can see it automatically being listed with other routers nearby. Also not password protected for this device.

I don't know the mechanics behind it, but I know that the newer Wi-Fi connected Roombas / app for example require precise location to be allowed before they can / will connect to Wi-Fi. Allowing "approximate location" only apparently stops them from connecting.

I'm not sure if there's an iOS security aspect to it that prevents them from connecting without precise location being enabled, or if it's something iRobot has figured hey need / want to allow Wi-Fi connectivity.

And why would tRobot or Roomba actually need that functionality to function? It can only be to capture data about their users. The only way to stop this is as Namcy Reagan said, "Just say no" and refuse to purchase spyware
