Hi, when I did a curbside pickup of my headphone, the guy who gave me the product was accompanied by a security guard. So did another Apple person who gave the product to another customer. Anybody knows why each Apple person who take out product for curbside pickup is accompanied by a security guard? Is Apple afraid of theft?

Between the coasts
Or caution for the safety of employees and customers who are transacting business beyond the walls of the store? Or concern that the goods that leave the store in an employee's hands actually are delivered to the customer? Or to protect employees who might be accosted by people hoping for technical support without making an appointment? Or for a combination of reasons that, each relatively unlikely, in total add up to a reasonable business expense?

We can guess and attribute whatever motives we want ("fear" seems to suggest there's no rational reason behind the action), but in the end, what's the big deal if they do or don't send a security guard? Are you a shareholder worried about unnecessary expenses eating into profits, or that it increases the price of your purchase?

They should be? I know the Apple Store where I live has been hit several times by theft - brazen daylight theft. https://abc7.com/rancho-cucamonga-apple-store-robbery-theft-caught-on-camera/2050330/ These were becoming more common too.

I'm very glad Apple has more security.

I've always tried to avoid walking out of an Apple store with a massive Apple bag - advertises way too much "I've got something expensive here! - Follow me to my car!"

Security has also been used to help order the crowds outside of the store - to assist with calling people into the store - checking people in - they've done a really good job of integrating them into the way these stores work now since covid hit.

I'm an ex-retailer. Stores are concerned about shoplifting and very concerned about internal theft. In fact, most large retailers wouldn't care much about shoplifters if losses from employees and subcontracted workers could be brought down to an immaterial level.

So, Apple's curbside pickup policy follows a procedure that is standard in retail: whenever goods or money leave the store with an employee, another employee must go along. And if the second person is not the same type of employee as the first person (to reduce the incentives for collusion, supposedly), even better. Who knows, a security guard may even be eligible for a reward if she or he stops a theft or reports an internal theft ring.
