So I was contemplating buying an ATV3 ($100 @ Apple Store) so that I could Airplay my mid-2009 MBP and use my TV as a second monitor.

I thought I'd save a couple of bux and go on Craigslist or Kijiji (aka eBay classifieds). To my surprise, the boards are dominated with ads of ATV1's and 2's selling for $200-300.

Can't find a single ATV3.

I'm guessing the ATV3 isn't Jailbreak-able but the 1's and 2's are?

Does that really warrant a 2-5 fold price increase (considering that they're used).

The Apple TV 1G's are expensive because they haven't been made in a few years and they have some features that the newer devices don't have and people may want. The Apple TV 2G's are expensive because they can be jailbroken. Unlike the 3G which may never be jailbroken.

They are expensive because a lot of people are using atv2s to cut cable. So imagine getting rid of a $70 monthly bill by spending a one time payment of $150ish and after a few months you are saving tons of money. When/if the ATV3 gets jailbroken the other prices will fall quickly.

Never?

Yes, never. Reason being there may never be an injection vector for the jailbreak. The only reason why the Apple TV 2 was jailbroken was because it had the limera1n bootrom exploit. The Apple TV 3 lacks that or any other bootrom exploit. The odds of finding one for A5 CPUs is very small, maybe nonexistent. Then there is the even smaller chance that the exploit will work on the Apple TV 3's unique single core A5 which may have a different bootrom than other A5 devices.

Interesting, I didn't know the reason why ATV3's might not be jailbreakable. Glad I have two ATV2's, but I had been hoping to upgrade to the ATV3 at some point.

Only reason I'd want to is for the faster processor which theoretically gives smoother playback (and 1080p). But I'm also not convinced I'll be able to distinguish the difference. So maybe I'll just settle in with my ATV2's for the long haul.

Thanks, that was very informative. You've given me some reading to do.

Thanks for posting this. Sold my ATV2 for $170 after reading this thread.

Also, Airplay only works on Mac's from 2011 up.

Hmm wow looks like its time to trade in my atv2 for TWO atv3s. Sounds like a good deal to me.

You are better off jailbreaking your atv2s for the incredible programming rather than making a very few bucks and getting a do nothing atv3.

The 2nd gen Apple TVs will most likely keep increasing in price. Pod2G tweeted today that the ATV3 jailbreak isn't being worked on and no news has been shared.
