Why are pictures rotated?

I'm a total newbie when it comes to taking photos with a phone, and now have the iphone 6. I notice on some pictures I take, the picture looks fine in the little preview pane, but when I send it somewhere it gets rotated on its side. What is that about, and how can I control it? It seems some pictures I had in the cloud got rotated on their side as well when I uploaded them to a website.

click EDIT, then click the button next to CANCEL, it should look like a square. The screen should change have a square with an arrow pointing counter-clockwise. Click that to however you want your picture orientated. Hope this helps!

I believe that the OP is talking about the fact that emailed pix show up rotated 90° on Windows computers. It happens when sending from iOS and being read by Windows.

To avoid the turn, before sending the photo, open it up in a viewing (PC) program (I use IrfanView) and save the photo. It takes more work than just emailing the photo directly from the iOS device but it works. If photo is sent from iOS device and email is read on iOS device, the turn doesn't occur. Or you can email the photo to yourself and then read the email on Windows, open photo in program (such as IV) and save the photo as I mentioned. Then distribute the photo as you wish.

You may be able to do the same thing using Photoshop Express on the iOS device, viewing and then saving photo. I haven't tried it.

I just open in windows picture viewer (default in windows) I rotate once and exit
 
That works, too. I just never think about Windows viewer because I never use it.

And it also doesn't solve the iOS to Windows problem when emailing from the device.
 
I don't have windows. Just iphone and a Mac Air.

Problem MIGHT have gone away, but not sure….

I didn't realize I had to. I would think in a Mac forum that one would assume one is a using a Mac computer unless they state otherwise.

When taking a landscape picture, the Home button should by your right hand not your left.. This will make the picture the correct orientation when viewed on non Mac systems.
 
off topic but how do i take video i recorded off my iPhone, and use handbrake to transcode the video, and avoid it being put on its side

i heard you have to export it with quicktime

there some post that says you use -7 --rotate <3> on options but it doesn't seem to have any effect

Oh. I see. I rarely use landscape mode so didn't follow.
