Have been thinking about getting the base model for awhile, but not really in any rush. The cheapest I have seen for refurbs on Apple's site is $509. Other places like Best Buy, MacMall and B&H Photo had new ones in the $580-$590 range.

Just looked today and saw that Best Buy has dropped their price to $560 and B&H has it for $550 (MacMall is still $580). When you consider that I wouldn't pay sales tax at B&H, their cost is only $5 more than a refurb from Apple and they will throw in a free copy of Parallels or Lojack to sweeten the deal.

Wonder what is going on here, just a summer sale or something else?...

Seems like I got a good deal

I bought a i5/4gb/500 mac mini from best buy on 04/18/14. Price was $539.99 , $60.00 off regular price. I have been checking from time to time and have not seen it sell for less. If you see a good price ,jump on it because they change the price in a day or two. Bobcat Ranny.

I mean, its 1 1/2 year old technology so people are not exactly scrambling to go out and buy them. They might have to lower their prices to keep them moving.

Maybe because of the upcoming upgrade? But just a simple summer sale would make more sense. Whatever the reason is, if you want one for a good price, now is a good time.

True. But it strikes me that it will be a better time AFTER they announce a new model. Hopefully that will get Apple refurbs well under $500. As I said, I'm not in a rush. Already have a top of the line MBA and an old 2008 MBP, the mini would just be used as an iTunes server.

I see. It's up to you of course, but if I were you I would buy it now right away, even when I wouldn't be in a rush. And I hate the feeling of buying an 'older' model after a new one is released anyway, makes me feel guilty lol. Anyway if you decide to wait, no problem, and there are probably more summer sales to come ;)

I don't think major retailers are really privy to upcoming apple releases until a week or so before the release. If stock has built up or if they just want people shopping at their stores, they might lower the price on any number of items and I think this is the case here. I bet that people that go to best buy to buy their mac mini probably spend some more money on peripherals for which best buy probably has a bigger profit margin.

Because it's 2 year old tech and the least glamorous/marketed of all Apple devices.
