This has been on my mind for a while.

Everywhere I look on the Internet, there are like 10-13 year old kids using Macs, iPhones, iPads etc. YouTube is a prime example: kids are all over it making "tech" videos.

Why are there so many? Admittedly, I got my first Mac when I was 13 when Tiger was Apple's OS - I'm now 17. I always have really loved computers. I got my Mac because I loved the platform and the stability... and the fact that I was the only person I knew who had a Mac.

It was just so solid, and still is for the most part, but I can't help but feel Apple has gotten a little sloppy with its last 2 OS releases. I did hear that around the time of Leopard, Apple had to allocate a lot of its OS X developers to the (then) iPhone OS. I hope Lion will bring back the magic from back when I got my Mac.

Anyway, when I was 13, I was out playing with my friends for the most part, not making "tech" videos. I wasn't doing "giveaways". I was just out having fun.

These days all these kids have a Mac, it sort of makes me feel silly, I don't know why. The sad thing is, many of these kids can't even say "Mac OS X" properly, they say "Mac OS Ex". Do they just use Macs and make "tech" videos because they think they're being cool?

I just don't get why so many kids are seemingly obsessed with Apple now. Are kids growing up too fast? Is it just a sort of long term fad?

God I feel old.

Your thoughts...

What you say is true. But wait until you're 53 and ask that question again. You'll be amazed at what you'll see around you then.

Yeah, I remember when I got my first Mac. Saved my life it did. Pulled me into that foxhole and took a bullet for me...

Dude you are 17 years old. As for as I am concerned you are part of that group of kids. HS kids I find are more obsess if not worse than the 12-13 year old. HS kids have knowledge to go find crap information and get more into the fanboy group.

As for why HS and done are so obsess with Apple is because it is the cool IN thing right now. Apple is the in fad right now. It was annoying when I was in HS 10 years ago but I have seen it has gotten worse than it ever was then. The Apple fanboys at a HS used to be just a handful then it got to what it is now were it is way to many of them and if you do not have Apple you are not cool.

I know what you mean, but I'm not really a fanboy. I think Apple's great, but creating software is my thing. I use both Windows and OS X, mainly Windows these days because it's the only officially supported OS for writing C# code on. I have also written some unreleased iPhone apps which obviously required me to use my Mac. I'm a fan of both OSes, but not a fanboy of either.

This is the "technology generation" so to speak.
A lot of teenagers are quite knowledgeable about this stuff now a days.

Btw, you fall in that category too :)

OMG -a 17 year old calling 13 year old "kids".

I'm 66, and suddenly I feel so tired. I think I'll go lie down.

I'm from the "TV Generation". You guys are from the "Computer Generation". And the 13 year olds are the "PC Free Generation". ;)

I'm going to wipe the drool off my keyboard and slam an Ensure.

It's because kids like things that are *exclusive*. Apple is more expensive than the typical toes, and so it makes one special to own one.

Maybe I am, but everyone needs to vent once in a while. I'm usually quite tolerant, but after the amount of 10-13 year olds I've seen making videos about Lion the past week I figure it's time to question why there's now so many of them using Macs as opposed to say, 4 years ago :)

Folks are waking up to a better computing experience, no matter what the age.

And a series of Apple products are helping them do that, particularly the iPhone. It's one of the gateways to Macs.

Fixed.

Apple's "fads" tend to a) last, and b) change entire markets permanently.

If you reach any further with your distortions you'll knock the ISS out of orbit.

sure you are not talking about your self.

Neither one of those change the fact that Apple is currently the in fad right now.

Also Apple has not been the "cool" thing for 10 years. iPod was becoming big in lets say 2003-2004ish but was growing. iPhone is what I saw really set them off. 5 years of being a fads. Fads can last a long time.

Simple answer to his question is currently Apple is cool and the "cool" thing to have. Your insane fanboysism does not change the fact. I am surprised you are not throwing up with how over the top you are and what is sad is you really believe the stuff you post.

Nope. I'm talking about the entire industry. The consumer market included.

Apple is established in what they do. It's not an "in" thing. It is "the" thing. It's reality.

iPod fad, iPhone fad, iPad fad, Mac fad . . . these things not only sell in record numbers but they also represent the highest and best expression of their market segments.

Looks like the iPad fad is killing the netbook fad, and is making a dent in the PC fad. The iPhone fad changed the face of the entire mobile industry, giving rise to the Android fad and WP7 fad (except the latter isn't' even that!)

If it's Apple, it has to be a fad. Tech that is "cool" and desirable and stylish can't by any means last in the market. No way. Not possible! It *is* possible and it's happening, but you don't think it's right. Of course, we're in a situation today in which tech needs to meet the above requirements as well. Tech is not simply a machine with specs, it's becoming a lifestyle choice. Apple is setting the tone for the next decade in consumer tech.

If you can't or won't deal with it, it'll just get more frustrating from here on in. Apple products aren't fads. They are standards to be met.

The numbers you've seen Apple post today are *nothing* compared to what's in store from them. This is but the tip of the iceberg.

I don't think they are obsessed with Apple products. I think they are hooked on the youtube fad of being "tech gurus" to get partnered and get money from Ad sense. Since Apple is pretty much the hot item atm and the target of rage and hate, it'll be easier to get views demoing, unboxing, etc Apple related stuff.

OK, I'll be the pedantic jerk to make a fuss about the word "fad"

There can't be a ten year fad.

Fad is defined as "a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc".

Ten years is not temporary.

Start the flaming - three...two...one...

I reckon you've hit the nail on the head with that one.

P.S. if people don't understand me when I mention the amount of 10-13 year olds making "tech" videos, lo and behold: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=videos&search_query=mac%20os%20x%20lion&search_sort=video_date_uploaded

So what do you call Apple being the "cool thing" own and to be in the "in" crowd you need Apple products. only word I can think of that sums that up really well is fad.
Btw fads can last years and Apple really has been the in thing maybe 5 years.
