hi guys,
i just wanted to know why some people on here absolutely hate the new imac's and others have jumped at the chance to get one?

personally i love them, i am ordering mine tomorrow. It will suite my needs perfectly.

I think its silly that people bat around benchmark scores in order to justify their purchase. These are all very good machines at the end of the day and when a mate on a windoz machine sees your imac they basically wet them selfs.

WHERES THE LOVE PEOPLE?!?!
 
Seems like it depends on what your expectations were. Some people were expecting Mac to set the world on fire. Others seem oblivious to the currency trades and how it affects costs. While some of us just expected mac to make another good product at a fair price. The latter of the group are happy.
 
Because some people see iMac as an overpriced machine (compared to equivalent off-the-shelf PC components), others see it as the compact all-in-1 and rate the value from that coupled with the OS "experience" ....

Why does everyone have to like everything? Answer: They don't ... hence why we don't all buy the same cars, clothes, houses, computers and everything else you could compare

Horses for courses, whatever floats your boat ..... pick your favourite phrase...
 
Dunno; all I really wanted out of it was a mini with Nvidia graphics that'll be happily cranked up in Snow Leopard, and that's what I got. Ran out and got one two days later :)
 
I think the main reason for people to be unhappy is the fact that 2 models of the imac use the same gpu as the macbook. This is quite different from the quality gap between the previous imac/macbook comparison.

Some people also took rumour as fact and expected the release to feature quad cores.

Although i myself would have liked the lower end imacs to have gotten a better gpu (as i'm getting one) the overall update is a welcome one, especially to my current pc (3.4 GHz p4, 2GB ram, radeon x1650 pro). I just can't wait to start working in os x again.

I am also looking forward to a future upgrade of 8gb ram once the price becomes more reasonable.

Is this really true? I am excited about picking up a Mini soon, but I feel it wont see all the upgrades of SL. Anyone care to enlighten me...or better yet point me to a thread that I have missed.

As someone looking to get an imac at some point this year the price does not concern me (well not as much as others anyway). Apple products are much greater quality than most PC's and PC's can certainly be as expensive for a very simaler spec if you look at certain models.

You can understand people's thinking. Yes it is not as nice, but it is not far off.

Though I'd certainly put up with the extra 10 mil depth for quad core in a nice imac.
 
not that easy. We don't know if this case design can offer enough cooling power to keep a quad-core from melting.
 
There are two reasons people are upset:

If you don't live in the US, the prices have gone up by about 30% as currencies have fallen. The reason is irrelevant as last week you could get an iMac of around £800 and now they start at over £900 in the UK and the final price is what people will see. This is even more annoying when combined with the second reason.

The upgrade is very disappointing. No LED backlight, GPU downgrades in two of the models and the high end models have simply a renamed version of the old GPU. The top end model hasn't even had a speed bump. Memory has doubled and hard drive space has increased, but the CPUs are falling far behind other makers (Core i7 and Core 2 quads have yet to hit). Essentially whilst Apple have doubled the memory and added more space, they have taken away with the GPU on the low end models and given a mere 5% CPU boost to one model.

Those that love the update are probably those that have seen the price fall and have no interest in the GPU.

Because whilst Apple are going on about the price cuts - here in the UK - they've gone up, significantly.

Now - you can cite the exchange rate till your blue in the face, but the fact remains that no other manufacturer is doing this, and a higher price, in real terms, for UK buyers - is a HUGE negative for already premium priced products.
 
Simple reason for disappointment among many in the iMac camp.

Simply put, this wasn't a real update. Now I won't disregard the new entry point for the 24" inch model. That is very nice but still overly steep compared to what people actually buy. Face it, unless they are interested in OS X to begin with most people will see that $1500 price and go buy a HP/Dell/Gateway with similar specs; though separate screen; for less than half the price. Hell they would probably have a quad core.

Which brings down point 2. Why no real processor update? We got a memory change which is more likely a requirement of the 9400m chipset which all iMacs now feature. It was very lackluster considering their is no real alternative for desktop Macs, that is with a discreet card. Video card options are not great; even bizarre if you consider an ATI being offered again.

The Mini? Overdue change and underwhelming as well. Basically it was for the same reason, get everyone on the same chipset to minimize Apple costs and support some new features in OS X. Still piss poor processors.

Mac Pro? The base model is GIMPED. Go read up on this travesty. Mainly what kills it is the base model is highly restricted on memory. Worse it still is only a four bay wonder.

No Quad Core in iMac. No Blu-Ray on any line. No LED screens on the iMac. No matte option; I have a 7600GT white iMac and I am loathe to buy a glossy underwhelming new machine.

Apple is still priced out of the market except for those who are fans of the OS. However the chance of getting new fans is practically nil because of the high cost of entry. My friends who I try to sell on OS X are all excited until they see what they have to pay.

The Mac Mini should have started at $399, there needs to be a mini-tower (think Dell slim line) Mac nearer $799, and then build from there. Oh, that base pro should be under 2K for the crap it is.
