I couldn't find an answer to this specific question. Lots of discussions about Safari being slow, but those are in general. Overall, I have no issues with Safari & use it as my primary browser.

My question is why specific websites are so much slower on Safari. I just tried to load the menu for Chili's restuarants. The menu opens up fine & I can click on a menu item, but when I go to make selections (how to cook the burger, etc), it's super slow (like taking minutes to show the dropdown options). If I open up the same website in Edge, the dropdowns open instantly.

It's not a universal problem, most sites open just fine. It's just certain sites. I'm not looking to switch browsers or anything, just interested (as someone who doesn't know much about programming, etc) in what might be causing the issue?

If you have extensions/plug-ins installed on your browsers there is likely some interaction between those and the website you are visiting. Note that when a user encounters a misbehaving website, the first advice given is always "disable your browser extensions."

Another possibility would be JavaScript compatibility. JavaScript is legacy browser technology dating back to the mid-Nineties when it was originally called NetScript. Regardless of its name it has long been known as a performance bottleneck and many browsers have tried different JavaScript interpreters over the decades.

Google Chrome is today's dominant web browser so many web publishers optimize their websites for that browser before others such as Safari. Ten years ago Microsoft's Internet Explorer was the primary target browser technology.

Safari has never been the dominant browser which would explain why Safari users periodically see more site incompatibility issues than others.

Thanks for the thorough explanation.

In my case I'd say the first thing to do is make sure you are using a reliable adblocker. AdGuard Pro covers more bases. Also has an extension to assist in filtering. Because ads are a major problem with web sites. Filtering them helps in multiple ways. In addition to Edge's own built-in blocking.

Thanks for the advice! I'll take a look at AdGuard Pro. I don't currently use any form of adblocker & didn't realize that could be impacting performance.
