I just don’t understand why Apple doesn’t make the two most important battery related features available to devices lower than the iPhone 15?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

• Charge cycle count
• Charge limiting

The cycle count data is definitely available on all devices, in fact we’ve been using coconut battery since ages to see that.

The charge limiting feature is simply a software toggle.

This is just bizarre to me.

I think it’s some hardware in new phones. That would be the iPhone 15 and newer.

That’s what I want to know. It doesn’t look like any of this is related to hardware at all.

May just be an overlook?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it’s hardware imo. Definitely not an overlook. Apple could have brought it to the iPhone 14…why didn’t they?

Exactly what I’m thinking. Nobody’s mentioned anything about it including iFixIt team.

Maybe greed. It could be that it was precisely that feature that made you buy a newer iPhone. As yourself mention, CoconutBattery can read the battery cycles, so iOS can also show it. Preventing the battery from charging longer than 80%, however, I could well suspect was a hardware feature.

iOS can temporary disable charging at 80% as a part of optimized charging (I.e. during night) so it’s not limited by HW. I think 5h was max time I had at this “pause”.

Simply it’s software locked
