The macOS TV app has long felt like one of those apps Apple doesn't care about – just something to tick off a list if you know what I mean. for example, why can't you do something simple in your movies library like right-click on a movie to add it to your Up Next queue?

But my main gripe right now is the inconsistency in the thumbnails of movies in the TV App Library. I buy all my movies for iTunes, but in my Library in the TV app, about 15% of them at any given time don't show the proper landscape thumbnail image. Instead it shows the movie's poster with blurred sides.

See image attached: The Royal Tenenbaums displays its thumbnail accurately, while Rushmore displays its thumbnail as a poster with blurred sides. The thing is, sometimes Rushmore will have the proper thumbnail and its other movies in my library that have the poster with the blurred sides.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Can't directly answer your question as the landscape splash page for movies seem to be a custom item for Apple TV which is different than the cover used on optical releases.

It might be related to the fact that there is no single "right" movie thumbnail for optical media. Different releases have different covers. Even the same release can have multiples. Don't know the rules for how they are selected in the TV app or how many landscape thumbnails are available. Plex allows you to select the cover for movies in its database. For this movie there are 38 different possibilities, just 6 of them shown here:

Apple TV has a totally different landscape thumbnail.

but it looks as if it is based upon one of the thumbnails. Don't know if this was computer generated or is a separate piece of artwork.

This has been discussed in a different thread:
ALL my Movies/TV Shows show exactly right in iTunes (10.14).
Wheras in the TVapp on my iPad some (as you say) show portrait with a space.

Apple obviously messed things up when moving from iTunes to TVapp.
