With the issues up to date is having and the fact that while my new Air qualifies, my 2011 iMac does not, aren't I just better off buying ML on my Air since I can still install it on my iMac without buying it again?

My up to date won't get me a free DL in the MAS on both machines, will it?

That's what I figured.

I'm sure I could up to date the Air and before the install make a USB of it for the iMac, but I don't see any reason to go through the hassle over $20. Besides the point I am obviously fine supporting Apple with what I've spent on systems.

He doesn't. Apple gives out redemption code for the up to date program.

Are you sure?

Once I put in redemption code, I can't imagine it would work on another machine. The only way I see it happening is if after I redeem and install on the Air, is going into the MAS on my iMac and having it appear in purchased - available for download.

But that's not for updating all Macs; only those that qualify for the up-to-date program.

Well, legally he can't but practically he can.

Yes this is how it works. And you won't be charged again.

The terms for the up-to-date say you can only use the code on eligible machines, but it also says the redeemed content is covered under the MAS licensing, which says its for all Macs you own.

Surely if you redeem it you can't even buy another copy of mountain lion because it'll already be on your account?

The impression I got is that you must use the redemption on an eligible machine, i.e. you can't sell or give your code away to someone else that doesn't have an eligible machine. Once redeemed, you should be able to use the licence on all computers you own under the MAS rules.

I'm not a lawyer though :)

That was my interpretation as well. That coupled with the fact that once its redeemed, you literally CANNOT purchase ML on that AppleID since its already on the account, leads me to believe thats the way its meant to be.

That is actually incorrect. Once you get the redemption code, that license is the same as if you bought ML from the Mac App Store - meaning you can then also install the new OS on any other Mac tied to your Apple ID. That was how I upgraded all of my machines to Lion last summer.
