ok. now that leopard is released, i'm looking to get a 17" mbp. i am not a student. so considering i can save $150, and get a free printer (yes a cheap printer), is there any compelling reason to get it straight from apple instead of macmall? i'm not trying to bash the apple store. i'm just trying to make sure i'm not missing some hidden secret everyone but me knows.

Don't feel obligated to buy it from the Apple Store, especially if you can get a better deal. Whether you buy it from Apple or a reseller, Apple will still treat you the same.
Plus, if you are buying a bunch of accessories you may get a better deal on everything from a reseller, if you buy the computer from them and whatnot.
I bought mine from a reseller when new MacBooks came out (I bought the "discontinued" model) and I saved $300 plus tax, and they gave me sweet deals on the extras that I bought.

first lets get something straight, leopard isnt "released" its "announced" you most likely will still have to pay the 10 dollars for the upgrade,
now,
macmall has had some bad reviews around here so be careful, i have a friend who always buys from macmall and other than with rebates he hasn't had really any problems with them

I bought...I think one of the first nanos from macmall, no issues. Would rather go through apple, but the rebates are what won me over on that one...
Unfortunately I can answer this question. If you buy a MBP from Amazon.com or another reseller and get a defective unit, Apple will not swap out that unit for a working MBP. They will repair the MBP, but they will not allow you to exchange it for a new model.
So then you have two options: you can send it to Apple and hope they fix whatever is wrong with it. You can send it back to Amazon and wait for a refund.
Amazon's refund process takes up to four weeks.
Normally I don't think this would be a problem, but with all the defective MBP's going around, it's kind of a gamble.
Just so you know, Apple has a (I think) $100 rebate on a printer with purchase of a Mac.
And personally, I'd purchase from Amazon instead, if I couldn't get a student or developer discount.
Bullsnot. I bought a matte MBP from amazon and it was a glossy in the box. Took it to the Apple store and they swapped it out on the spot.
Why?? Well I was in Salt Lake City for work and visited the apple store there. I am now a first time Mac user and owner of a 15" MacBook Pro. When I was working with the associate at the store I informed him that I would like to make a purchase tonight. We talked for a time about which screen he prefered (mat finish or glossy) and I deceided on glossy. He then asked me if I was a student and I stated nope but I have 2 in college. He then said I could have the student discount on the applecare saving me $110.00. I asked if I could get the discount on the laptop, he stated "sure" saving me another $200.00. So you ask the question if? My answer after being in CompUsa and getting no help earlier that night....YES. Great service and a great price!!!
Although, if you read the original post, the OP makes it clear that the education discount is unavailable in their situation. In which case, shopping from the Apple Store would actually be more expensive than shopping at Amazon.
Though if he bought it on the 26th from Apple, they'll either give him a copy of Leopard, or slide an upgrade disc into the box.
Thats what they did with Tiger IIRC.
OK so my point was not if or if not you were a student ( as I am not ) the point was that if you can get service like I got at the apple store, then go for it.
