Why can't Apple fill job positions?

There are over 600 software engineer job postings at Apple. You'd think people would be running at them. Everything from Core Audio to Core Graphics to iCloud, iWork, GPU drivers for iOS. OS X has some, I'm sure, I just got tired of looking at the list.

So many job listings, so many people not applying.

The company is setting up millions of square feet of corporate workspace all around the country and world...I'd imagine they're in the hiring process right now....

I just did a jobs search at Microsoft and if you search on operating systems and applications there are over 500 job listings (the search won't show more than 500 at a time). I don't think Apple is unique there.

Most likely those are posting that are never taken down, as engineers rotate out to other companies or more senior roles at about the same rate that Apple can find new hires.

The pass-through rate is probably high because these silicon valley mega-star companies like Apple make great resume anchors. Spend a 2-5 years at one of these highly praised and highly recognizable companies, put it at the top of your resume and embellish your role or accomplishments, and then move into an lesser known company where life is cushier.

I am sure they have plenty of applicants. Finding good engineers that fits your team isn't easy in my experience. In my last job i was involved in hiring software engineers, after initial resume screening, phone interview and onsite interview, maybe ~ 1 out of 20 people got a job offer from us.

And obviously, there is always a certain percentage of your employees leaving (finding another job, retiring, getting fired for browsing too much on macrumors)
So increasing your team can be a challenge...
