Why can't Apple let us upgrade SD to HD?

Just was looking through the store and at least 4 movies I bought when they were only available in SD are now available in HD. Why can't Apple let us upgrade for a small fee? I am getting to the point where I am used to HD and SD on my big screen is starting to drive me nuts, and that TV is only 42" I don't see how people with bigger TVs can take it.

It's not a matter of ability, but of choice. They don't let you, it's not that they aren't able.

this is why i only rent from netflix either a blu-ray dvd or just stream it.

i am tired of having to buy something twice. I purchased lord of the rings trilogy twice the deluxe set had more footage. Mostly credits since then mo more.

It's not a matter of ability, but of choice. They don't let you, it's not that they aren't able.

it might be that they aren't able, a lot of the weirdness in the iTunes store comes from the content providers.
for apple to provide an upgrade at a lower cost, either the studios would have to be willing to take a lesser fee for that upgrade or apple would have to be willing to lose money on each upgrade.

I guess it is the same thing with Blu-Rays, when the studio will release the movie on Blu-Ray than come out with a special edition a few months later with more added content.

The things that drives me the most crazy though is that movies like Back to the Future can only be rented not bought in HD.
