Why can't i get my iPhone Xr linked to my iPad?

my old iphone 5c was linked to my ipad, meaning that if i sent a text on one or the other, both devices would see the text conversation

last night i got a new Xr and had my old 5c assigned a new phone number so my son could have the 5c. problem is now when i send a text via the ipad, he winds up in on the conversation on the old 5c phone.

i went in to Settings (on the ipad) and could see his number in the Messenger section. my only allowable action was to un-check his phone number but there was NO way i could overwrite his phone number with my Xr's number. i wound up deleting his phone number from the ipad's messenger which solves the problem of him receiving my texts. however, for the life of me i can't find a way to get my Xr's phone number into the iPad. how do i do this?!

Are the iPad and the XR on the same Apple ID?

If the XR and the iPad are on the same Apple ID you should be able to send and receive texts from the iPad.

Did you sign the old phone out of iCloud, remove as a trusted device? And reset to new?

Sharing same Apple ID? If so, should be using Family Sharing.

On new phone, might try signing out of iCloud and sign back in.

[doublepost=1542929095][/doublepost]I don’t even have that option (text message forwarding)...it goes from “show contact photos” to “send read receipts “. I DO have something that says, “send & receive” that shows the Apple ID that the two devices are sharing, but that’s as close as I get

You need to be signed in with the same Apple ID on both your XR and iPad. You are probably still signed in with your Apple ID on the old 5c. I would sign out of account in the 5c then reset it.

I AM signed in with the same Apple ID on both. It’s the only ID I have. When you say “reset” the 5c, do you mean sign back in (after signing out), or something else?

I would sign out of iCloud/Apple ID on all 3 devices, reset the 5c to factory (settings>General>Reset>Erase), then sign back in on your two devices.

You really need to setup Family Sharing. With a shared ID, a message sent to one person will show on all the other devices signed in to that id.

If you go to Settings, first thing you see is the Apple ID you're signed in on. Tap on that, then iCloud, probably will see the Messages toggle on. With the newish iCloud Messages, all messages get saved to cloud and will pop on all the devices with that ID.

You think you are not using cloud, but the shared Apple ID, you really are using cloud when signed in.

The old 5c went to my 11 year old son. I’d prefer he didn’t see all of my texts (or my wife’s). Given what’s going on I think a new, separate Apple ID might be best, probably for his new account?

Any device on the same Apple ID will get texts sent to that ID. So your idea to give your son a different Apple ID is correct.

Sign into your own Apple ID and your Xr should show up as a device. You will also need to go to FaceTime settings and make sure it’s showing there (important: you need to do this EVEN if you don’t use FaceTime).

i just did this. when i was done i assigned the 5c a new apple id. i then signed in my Xr and iPad to my existing account but if someone sends me a text the ipad still isn't receiving the text, only the Xr. also if i send a text from the Xr, the ipad shows no record of it, and vice-versa even though they're signed in on the same apple ID. makes no sense.

Yes, the 5C needs its own, separate Apple ID.
