I tried to install Boot Camp version 1.4 today. But each time I get to the partitioning part I get the error seen in the picture I have posted below. What is going wrong?

looks like you're trying to make a fat 32 partition which is larger than 32GB. Try again but with a partition size of 32GB or change to ntfs (assuming you can)

What is happening is that there are some system files (swap file, page file, etc...) that can not be moved while your disk is mounted. If you have enough free space you either need to format and reinstall OS X. Or get a disk defragment utility that will move those files to a different location on the hard drive. This happened to me and I purchased iDefrag. It solved the problem.

Does anyone know of a free defrag utility which can be used for this?

I have the exact same problem and I've used Disc Warrior 4 to optimize my drive.
Doesn't matter what size I try to make it (30GB, 32GB or 50GB) it always gives me that message.

But the previous Boot Camp did work, so I don't know what's different now

I fixed that problem by rebooting with the mac install cd (by holding 'c' when booting) and then running Disk Utility from the Tools menu. From there can you repair your drive and then Boot Camp will work. Good luck!

Didn't work for me:(
No errors found either.

I think I messed up somewhere when I tried to remove my previous Vista install with the windows XP cd. I removed the partition and tried to make a FAT32 disk.

When I had this problem I ran MainMenu scripts and maintenance tools to clean up my hard drive. It managed to move enough for me to partition, but not by much.

Not sure if you did this too... but the first time I made the following mistake (step 3):

1: created the partition from BootCamp, 2: booted into windows, 3: deleted the partition from windows setup and created a new one. #3 is the mistake, when creating the partition from windows setup it was too slightly too big. The way to fix it to go back into mac and merge the partitions, reboot, then create a new one again which is less than 32Gb. Hope this helps.

Did the exact same thing, but the weird thing is that the other partition doesn't show in OS X.

BTW I do have a Parallels folder, but do I have to delete it completely ?

TO SOLVE THIS!!!!

This is nothing to do with FAT 32gb or anything like that.

It's to do with the GUID Partition System, and there is only one way to repair it. And the issue is common on first installation of bootcamp.

-------------------

How to solve this

Start your apple with the restore disc it came with. Pop the disk in your drive and hold down C when you boot - to boot from the disk.

This will start installation procedure of mac OSX - don't worry you wont be installing.

After the first window, simply choose UTILITIES from the MENU at the top of the screen. Then choose DISK UTILITY.

Once Disk Utility is running, simply click REPAIR disk.

Your HDD will be checked and repaired.

Reboot your mac.

You will now be able to install bootcamp.

:)

Try the archive and install method

I had the exact same problem. I tried repairing permissions as well as booting up with the install CD and repairing the system folder. Went back and tried to install bootcamp and got the exact same error message again. Some files could not be moved yada yada yada.

The only thing that worked was doing the archive and install. This is not the same thing as wiping your hard drive. It just installs a new system folder and moves all your settings over to the new one. You then reboot into the new system folder (the old can now be thrown away).

After this boot camp installed without a hitch.

The best size is whatever you need. I used 15 GB. After WinXP and its 2GB virtual memory file, there's about 10 GB free for apps, which is sufficient for me. 30 GB would have impinged too much on the Mac side, for me.

What do you need the Mac OS disks for? You use the BootCamp program to setup the partition and create the Windows Drivers disk. And you need a Windows install CD.
