Just curious, Apple says to "use your main primary email address" as your appleID but yet when I try to use my me.com email account I get an error telling me that I can't use a me.com email.

What gives?

You're trying to sign up for a new account, yes?

I think you can't register a @me.com address because it's already an Apple ID by default. Perhaps try logging in with your @me.com account to the Apple Store or iTunes Store and see if it works. Maybe you don't need to setup a new account at all; assuming your MobileMe account is still active, you already have one.

Ok, I already have a me.com account. I made it when I got my mac a few months ago. I just logged into the appleID management site applied.apple.com using my me.com address as my appleID as you specified and it works!

HOWEVER, under "AppleID and Primary Email Address" it has my hotmail address listed and when I change it to the me.com email address, underneath in red appears "You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID."

Hmmm... I suspect you used your hotmail address as your primary email when registering for MobileMe (or, you entered an Apple ID when registering for MobileMe to make the signup process faster).

For me, it shows my @me.com address as both my primary and alternate email addresses.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it makes no difference: your MobileMe address will probably be forever linked to that Apple ID, no matter which 'Primary Email' you enter. In other words, I suspect you will always be able to enter either your primary email (hotmail currently, but you could change this) or your MobileMe address when logging in.

It's strange that Apple won't let you enter the MobileMe address as your primary, but then again, it's also strange that they won't let us merge accounts (I have six, through no fault of my own)!

@me.com accounts are by default AppleIDs. So basically it isn't letting you change the primary email address to that one because your @me.com address is already the primary address for its own AppleID.

So then when I log into appleid.apple.com using <myname>@me.com as my applied, shouldn't it show my me.com address as my primary?
