Right now iMessage syncs messages between devices using your email address. Unfortunately, everyone sends me iMessages to my phone number and hence they don't sync from my iPhone to my iPad.

Wouldn't it be easier if we could use our phone numbers to sync iMessages?

I have the same problem here. Has anyone found a solution for this. It would be way convenient to reply to and send "texts" from my mac. Even if those "texts" are really iMessages. I don't want to have to tell everyone to start messaging me using my email instead of my phone number.

the answer is as i've feared. it seems only logical that you should be able to tie your phone number to your apple id for iMessages on the mac and iPad. That should be standard.

If Apple really wanted to overachieve, they would let you send and receive real text messages from your iPad or Mac using a proxy on your iPhone.
