Hi there,
I have an iPhone because I need a phone, need to text, but I can live without getting emails and surfing the internet whenever/wherever.
I don't have a data plan, and I don't pay for 'Who Called' or anything like that. Yes I'm frugal (have to be).
But I don't see why my phone can't tell me who called (if I miss a call), if the number of the caller is in my Address Book (and Address Book is installed on the iPhone, which it is).
Is there a way to get this feature, without having to pay my service provider for it?
Thanks very much,
malch

thank you, both, for your replies.
Yes, that's what I would have expected. I'm in Canada; service provider is Rogers/Fido... not hopeful, but I'll call.
Regards,
malch

So does your iPhone show the number but not the name of the caller, or what exactly does it show in your recent calls?

- If it shows the number but not the name, you don't need to call Fido. The issue is inside your iPhone. Fido only delivers the number (unless the Caller ID provides name data, but cell phones do not do this generally). It's the iPhone's job (or any other phone's job) to match the name up with the caller. That's why, if you go back and add a caller to your phone book, suddenly all the old calls by that person are tagged with their name. If this is what you've got, try restoring your iPhone instead of calling Fido.

- If you're not getting a number at all, then you should call Fido.

These calls are definitely from people in my Address Book (name, address, phone number, etc.), but all I get when someone calls is
"Unknown Caller"
So I guess I will call Fido.
Thanks for your help.

This probably has nothing to do with data but rather that your account does not have call display as an option.

How long have you had this phone? Because I really hope you have gotten a bill from AT&T.

If you haven't I really think you might be shocked at your data charges. Plus I'm not really sure how you don't have a data plan as AT&T will not let you take it off of your phone. It clearly states with you sign a two year contract that you cannot take that data plan off of your service.

Just so you know, even when you check your voicemail it is using data. Just about anything you do is using data. MMS will when it comes out later this summer and you cannot do MMS and voicemail through wi-fi.

If you can't afford the $30 a month maybe you shouldn't have gotten a smart phone?

Well I don't know how AT&T will bill him if he's not on their service since he's a Canadian with Fido.

And like someone said, maybe that person who is calling you has their number blocked - my friend has his like that and his shows it up as "Unknown caller".

I'm with Rogers in Canada. Unless you're paying for call display with Fido, theres absolutly nothing your iPhone can do.

Caller ID is not a package feature for the typical iPhone plans in Canada? Is it common for people not to get caller ID on cell phone plans there? In the US it's essentially always been a free part of essentially every cell phone service -- both prepaid and postpaid.

Hi all,
I bet you're right, dvince2... I probably have to pay for caller display.
As to why I have an iPhone, well, I have Mac computers, and I wanted things to sync up easily; I carry my updated Address Book info with me everywhere I go, for example, and it's easy to update it whenever I need to. I could maybe do this with some other kind of phone, but I thought it would be easier with the iPhone.
Cheers, malch

You can get a 10 dollar bundle that includes visual voice mail, Caller ID as well as "Who called".

I pay at total of 79.95 before taxes for:
150 Minutes + Unlimited Evenings/Weekends + Unlimited Incoming Calls
6GB Data
Launch iPhone Value pack (5pm evenings, texts,Who Called, Call Display) + VVMail

I tend to call weekends and evenings.
