I am sorry to add yet other thread about iPad vs PC. This has been debated several times, but i still don’t get why. All these debate started with Apple’s famous statement that iPad can be PC replacement. But I think this is just flat out none sense.

I mean iPad is iPad, it is not designed to be PC replacement. In functionality wise, there are overlaps. There are things that both can be done. But there are also things PC can do things better and more efficient and there are other things iPad can do things better and more efficient.

iPad was never designed to be PC replacement. Steven pushed iPad out as middle ground of smartphone and PC. It never designed to replace PC, so why there is such debat that iPad can be full PC replacement?

Most of us who was born before 90s, were grew up with Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and so on. Some people were grew up with Mac. I still remember i was running DOS commends and loading Windows 95 from DOS. We grew up with PC interface, mouse and keyboard operations, transfers files back and forth, navigating files from different folders, downloading files to one location and open files from there, we are familiar with grab a USB drive and transfer files that way. PC until this day were still base on these operation and negviation logics.

iPad on other hand is totally different. It has different way to negaivate system UI, it has different way to store files, it has different way to get files transferred, it has different way to install software, it has different way to do almost everything. It is designed completely different way with PC. For lots of us, iPad requires lots of relearning and purchasing whole new set of accessories. And most of us unwilling to do that.

So what am I saying. iPad is different, it is not designed to be full PC replacement nor it serves purpose as full PC replacment. If one try to focus PC mentality to iPad, it will hit the wall hard. We should really draw a line between iPad and PC. Both have its reason to exist and both serves different purpose.

If someone foud that they can do everything on iPad, then good for him/her. But iPad will not be PC replacement nor it should be. Why can’t we just use iPad as iPad and use PC as PC. Why should we have to choose between one but not use both?

Why can’t people just let other people do what works for them instead of making yet another thread about it?

First of all, I am entitled to make a thread. If you don’t like it , please not read or reply. If you think it is inappropriate, report it.

What I am saying is that if iPad works for them, then good for them. However, people should treat iPad as iPad, not replacment of PC. Use iPad as iPad and use PC as PC. Just because iPad works for someone, doesn’t mean it is full PC replacement. Lots of people are injecting idea of iPad is future and PC is doomed and iPad works better than PC or PC works better than iPad. It is not.

It’s not your call to say what people should or should not do or say, and you don’t get decide for other people what the best tool for the job is.

Did I makes a decision for other people what the best doe job is? I am saying that when people use iPad, it should treat as iPad. It is first and foremost an iPad. When using it, people should not using PC mentality on judging iPad. If iPad works fine for someone, then that is good. If Pc works for them then it is good. If people using both then that is good. But one will never replace other.

And it is not you call to decide if I should make a thread for this topic.

So......you just claimed you weren’t making decisions for other people and then immediately did it again.

I think this is a good topic for discussion. It’s an ongoing debate and interesting to hear from all sides. This is a forum, after all, where ideas about the iPad and its future are shared.

I personally think this thesis might be argued as correct currently, but at some point in the future the 2 will converge. Especially as processors and platforms expand and become more multifunctional. People won’t want to buy and support separate hardware devices and software for their specific computer needs. Along the lines of the smartphone absorbing functions considered seperate in the past.

No I did not. I merely insert my opinion with this subject. However you want use devices is not my concern. You can argue some thing is more meaningful, instead of pointing fingers.

I think this is absolutely the case—it's an interesting discussion if we can avoid applying things broadly. In my day job, I found that the combination of an iPad (mostly living in email, browsing, SSH, and Microsoft RDP) and a Chromebox (connected to a big display as a sort of second screen) is a great combination. Just as a Commodore VIC20, original Mac, Apple II, Radio Shack TRS-80, and an IBM PC all handled things differently in the early days of personal computers, there are many ways to solve a task and different people work well with different tools.

What I've found is that with moving to an iPad for many specific, non-browser tasks, my iPhone is a great backup in a pinch (Prompt is a universal app and a VPN allows me to connect back to work to fix something if necessary). I wouldn't want to work from a 5.5" screen all day long, so that's where the iPad still works best.

On the other hand, I have colleagues that love traditional Windows laptops with the 10 key numeric keypads, others who use Surfaces, and a few that have desktops. The flexibility in this day and age and that the barrier of entry can be quite low makes it great that people have choices and no product or category has to "lose" for all of us to win.

It’s a good topic for discussion, but the way the topic was presented in this particular thread is ridiculous. It’s also superfluous since the same topic gets posted here about 100 times a day.

1) It’s nobody else’s business how I should or should not think about my iPad or Mac or what philosophy I should have when using them.

2) If I’m going by the OP’s signature, I don’t think he or she even has an iPad.

3) A lot of common computer users have woken up to the fact that in their personal computing, they don’t need much more than a tablet or even just a smartphone. We used beige box desktop computers in our homes in the 90s because that was the only option we had, and they were usually Windows machines because that’s what we learned on at work and school. The things we did on those home PCs can now all be done on a super computer that fits in your pocket or a tablet that has more power under the hood than we know what to do with.

I get that the Mac/PC people are uncomfortable with the change. I was too for a while. But that doesn’t change the fact that the paradigm shift is happening.

Well..Mabye in the future it might converge, but I think I order for that to happen, both iOS and Mac OS or whatever need to change along with it. Maybe the hybrids will accept one than one port, maybe there will be a switch to switch between tablet mode or full desktop mode instantly or maybe something we never thought of.

As currently, I think iPad still iPad, it works completely different with Windows/ Mac OS or Linux. It is still mostly phone OS with some tablet features. People should really set expectations right. You really can’t say just because iPad can not directly connect my Ethernet or printer, then iPad is not PC replacement. iPad and Pc works differently, designed differently and function differently.

Sure.

But maybe not everyone needs a PC in the first place.

Since personal computers were invented... everyone used the same type of machine. (of course with varying degrees of speed)

All we had were full PCs for decades. A 3D modeller used basically the same type of machine as your grandmother checking her email.

But now... there are different types of machines.

There are still "heavy" machines like standard desktops and laptops... but there are many types of "light" machines like iPads, Chromebooks, etc.

Just remember that people have different requirements. It's nice to have options these days.

I have both iPad Pro 12.9, 10.5, iPad 2017, iPad 2018, iPad 4, iPad mini. So you don’t tell me that I don’t have iPad. I posted thread about my iPads.

I don’t make decision for you, I put my thought on this issue. If you stil, insist, then I don’t care.

For me, PC is still PC and iPad is still iPad. Two things are different and designed different and serve different purposes.

Exactly. Different devices, different purpose. People need choice whatever fit for them and not claim superiority with one to other. To claim something is replacement of something, to me is one that is superior that is being replaced.

Correct, you don’t make my decisions for me and your opinion is an opinion. It’s just that you’re not presenting it like it’s merely an opinion. Also, you could have posted this opinion in one of the several other threads that were created on this topic in the last couple days instead of starting yet another new one.

You don’t make a decision for me if I want make a thread or post as opinions on other thread. You are criticizing me making decision for me and then you make decision for me to not start a thread.

While I can't speak for the OP, but my guess is because its a different take on the whole subject, instead of saying one is better than the other. And also cause most of those threads were derailed by posts like these, which stray far from the original point.

Yes... other thread, people are too focused on debating whether iPad can or cannot replace PC. I want a different take on the whole subject, therefore, I made new thread. I just want people to know that I think two serves different purpose and instead of what can replace others why can’t we just treat as different devices and find what best to use for specific tasks.?

It all depends on an individuals needs I guess. I work from home and use an iPad, desktop and even a Chromebook at certain times throughout the day. The desktop is my main work tool purely because of the file system and my software needs, the iPad is fantastic for checking things on the move and the Chromebook is becoming increasingly useful.

If I didn’t work from home I could easily use my iPad as my main computer, for personal use it does everything I need from a device with added benefits.

Short answer - some of us want to make the iPad our sole device. For people like me, I just prefer the experience of using my iPad - the simplicity of iOS, the light weight and performance. So much so, that I would like to be able to ditch a normal PC. My 10.5 Pro is one of the most versatile mobile devices of its size and the promise of being able to rely on it as my main device is very seductive.

I’m getting there, with the help of you all!
