Why can't Safari keep me signed into sites that Chrome can?

This is one of my biggest gripes with Safari. I'll log into a site, make sure to check the "Remember Me" box, I'll exit the tab, and load the site again later in the day, and I find that I'm signed out. Goodreads, for example. Chrome keeps me signed into Goodreads for months at a time. Safari can't seem to keep me signed in for a day. Am I doing something wrong? Is my ad-blocking app causing trouble? Or is this just how Safari works?

Sounds like something is either blocking the cookie they try to set, or deleting it.

I'm just wondering what that might be, then, because I can't think I'm using that would cause that to happen. I don't have "Block All Cookies" checked.

It probably does it on purpose but in any case, is it actually a problem?
Is there something different going on for you because Safari automatically loads my details and I sign back in with one click so I've never seen it as a problem.

I think it's pretty obvious why Chrome never signs you out: Google likes to follow you around wherever you go. Sign into Gmail and it signs you into ever other Google app you have and you have to physically search to sign out.
Then they keep tabs on what you are doing the whole time you are signed in.
I always sign out anyway but I imagine Safari does it on purpose as a safeguard.

I'm all for calling out Google shenanigans, but this isn't one of those times. "Remember me" functionality is a pretty common thing, and doesn't tie you implicitly to a Google account.

Anyway, @ThisBougieLife, I just tested the site you mentioned specifically (GoodReads.com) - I created an account, signed out, went back to the sign-in page (and I tried it also from the home page header sign-in box), ticked "Remember Me", signed in, quit Safari, re-opened, returned to the site, and it still shows me as logged in.

There's a bunch of different ways that sites implement "Remember Me", but they basically all revolve around storing a cookie with a long (which is a relative term) lifetime.

Is it all sites that fail to "remember" you, or just that one specifically, or some do, some don't?

This may be related to the new tracking prevention where third-party content is periodically deleted. You could try turning it off - if it's on - to see if it makes a difference.
