This happened with my brand new 12 Pro Max a few months ago, now my new Mini. I was shooting HDR 4K 60p video with my Max in 90 degree heat. Phone started getting warm and the screen dimmed after about 5 minutes. Let it cool off for about 10 minutes, picked it up and tried just 4K 60p with no HDR this time, same thing happened.Posted about it here back then too. Chalked it up to it being a hot day.

Yesterday, I was shooting video with my Mini in 72 degrees which I wouldn't call "hot" at all. No, HDR and no 4K. Just regular HD (1080) 60p, same thing. Phone warmed up, screen dimmed so you couldn't really even see it in the sunlight after 5 minutes. Really Apple? This wasn't a 5 minute video either where it ran continuously. They were 1-2 minute videos and a few 15 second clips. Even if it was 5 minutes of video, it cant handle that? Im surprised people haven't been posting about this on Youtube videos. Im about to. Completely ridiculous.

Every iPhone I've had overheats if used in direct sunlight, and many times even in the shade. The camera stresses the SoC, so yeah, I'd say that's fairly normal.
Really? Ive never shot much video with the iPhone, mostly photos. Doing more video work now though. I could see overheating with HDR, or maybe even 4K 60p but 1080 60p? Thats pretty ridiculous to have a $1k phone that cant even shoot 5 minutes of video in the sun.

No issues here 12 pro max, never been a issue on my previous iPhones as well.

Maybe you have a exynos 2100 chip in your iPhone lol.

I was curious, so I looked up the specs; which says "Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)".

Add sun to that and you're very quickly beyond those numbers; so you honestly couldn't even leave it out in the open while having a drink and expect it to happily just keep working.

I was using my Xs in 45 C for many hours when i was on holiday. I even filmed several minutes 4k 60 under a few hours. When at the beach the phone was very warm to the touch the whole day because of the warm air.

Everytime i used it the screen would dim down below lowest setting to i guess create less heat. I did not get any warnings or shutoffs though.
Completely normal and i would not worry about that.

I agree that its strange that it gets warm so quick, even just filming in 1080p. Doubt that its normal, i would call apple support.

No reason to call Apple because my 12 Pro Max and Mini have both done it. Its not an issue with the phone, its an issue with Apple's tech. Both the phones get warm using the 20 watt charger and the screen will dim the same way if Im trying to do something like watch videos or talk on the phone while charging. Very poor design.

My phone never gets hot when using the apple 30W charger. 🤔

12 pro max.
Ok, and you talk on it and watch videos while you charge it and it doesn't get warm and the screen dim? Find that very hard to believe. I has two 12 PM and both did it, so does my Mini. Its a poor design on the 12s

Not using it a lot while it’s charging, maybe it’s a safety feature apple put in place.
