Just updated to MacOS 12.6, which included an update to Safari 16.0. My Bookmarks/Reading List/etc. links used to be sensibly located at the upper left of the sidebar. Now they've been inconveniently pushed down to the lower left, leaving lots of wasted white space. Any idea why they did this? [See screenshot]

I can see them wanting to give priority to the list of Tabs, but if there's just one Tab there (as in this example), there's no reason to push the Bookmarks link to the bottom. The location of the Bookmarks link should be able to autoadjust up and down based on what's above it, just like the Locations section does in Finder's sidebar.

I know that. I'm asking why they moved a key link from the upper left to the bottom left.

I.e., why is that what you see when you open the Sidebar? All that whitespace seems like an odd UI choice for Apple, both functionally and aesthetically.

The answer is that the designers of Safari are obsessed with their Tab Groups feature and assume everyone is using it heavily. It's been apparent in the last couple of versions that it now rules the roost in the Sidebar.

I have the same problem its infuriating when Apple take something that works flawlessly and change it just for the hell of it.

No one here knows why it's set up this way, just remember that if it doesn't decrease Apple sales figures it's not their problem. But send a note to Timmy anyway; he'll put it on his to-do list, right after World Domination.
