I have 4 backups of my main HD: TimeMachine and 3 external HDs. See the Finder image I attached. Why does Finder display the name of the external HD, then show again a clone image? What did I turn on to get double display of the externals?

Open the Disk Utility app in Applications->Utilities folder. Click on View->Show All Devices. Post a picture of what is shown.

You've just dragged shortcuts to the sidebar inadvertently. just remove some,

This is my view in Disk Utility, I don't think the items in left col Finder are alias's. Maybe I'm wrong.

Unmount and physically disconnect each of the external hard drives. Perform an SMC reset. That should clean up the duplicate HDs on the sidebar.
