All iPads Why do people care so much about how thin a tablet (or even phone) is?

Sure you don't want it to be super thick, but why do tablets and even phones have to keep getting thinner, they were already thin enough, they are at the point where they are just more difficult to gripe or hold because its too thin, plus when it gets too thin its just much easier to break.

I never understood the craze for these kind of things to be super thin.

I disagree, especially with tablets. The Air was the first iPad that felt like the device originally imagined. I have both the 4 and the Air and the Air feels SO much better to hold. Getting it thinner and lighter (was hoping for a bigger weight loss with the Air 2) will continue to make it closer to the ideal of a digital piece of paper.

Even with the phones, I didn't think I'd care as much about the thickness with the ip6, but it really does help disguise the new larger size in your pocket. My 5s somehow already feels too thick!

for the same reasons people care about how small the bezels are, or how thin a TV or a Laptop is. Its all about aesthetics. Thin looks cool.

I guess I can see why a tablet would want to be thinner, you make a good point with that because of the weight, i have the iPad for two years ago, and i thought that was perfectly fine thickness wise. I used an iPad air that my parents have, and for me i think its too thin but i guess thats just me.

I think my bigger issue is with the phones, I like to be able to grip my phone when using it, i have the 4S and that is perfect IMO, I want to get the iPhone 6 soon, but worry it will be too think for me. I will get a case for it, that will add a little bulk, but I still think it can get too thin at some point.

But if the goal for tablets is a piece of paper thin, (as close as you can get) then I guess ill never be happy when it gets that close

The original retina iPad was a monster. Very uncomfortable to use, in my opinion.

The newest iPad might be on the verge of becoming paper thin, but with piss poor multitasking and dreadful specs, I'd rather have a slighter clunkier SP3 which not only has 8x the RAM, but also an i7 and runs better software.

When the iPad came out, it was unique. Now it's just lost it's edge and it's mildly depressing how irrelevant it's become.

Me too! It wasn't so bad compared to the iPad 2, but compared to the iPad Air. It's a huge difference. 0.34 pounds lighter doesn't sound a lot, but it is significant.

Yeah, but the thing is they made it thinner without making it lighter. Ok, maybe the slightest amount lighter. But not really noticeable. I think the main reason they made it thinner was because they can. The new chips are so tiny that it's nearly all battery inside now. I just wish that they would explore some new materials that could be used to make the next revolutionary step, like making an iPhone that unfolds into an iPad without leaving a seam. I think that's eventually what going thinner will bring us.

As others have mentioned here, lighter is what makes people happy, not necessarily thinner.m I feel my current Air is plenty thin enough as it is. A few grams shaved off is always welcomed but don't go making it paper thin.

On a side note: Today's event was a big disappointment to me. I was expecting the new iPads to have HD Retina screens, and the same rounded design as the iPhone 6.

I agree that nobody wants a fat device but the fact that the Air 2 is thinner than the Air one is not enough to make me want to buy it. In fact, I don't think I ever bought anything because it's thinner.

Thinness isn't a huge thing for me at this point, but weight still is. If thinner yields less weight, then I'm all in, as long as there aren't major sacrifices to get there.

I love my macbook air.

But with iOS devices, it just seems to be a pissing contest with themselves at the expense of "same great 10 hour battery life-- all day"

1. From this point onward, no more thinness is necessary.
2. Today was disappointing, as I was also hoping for an increase in PPI.
3. I was hoping, if not expecting, a "6-like" appearance.

My iPad mini 2 is pretty thin but I have a case on it that makes it thicker. I personally think iPads should be thin but not too thin as they are made to be held in the hands.

The asthetic is that it is like the hardware just disappears and it’s just you and the net. That’s how I felt when I first held an Air 2.

With that said, I think there really is no necessity to go any thinner if it means sacrificing battery life and performance. The current thickness is just fine. However, keep on reducing the bezels please!
