This drives me nuts, two companies as big as this have no excuse not to have implemented this very basic feature that is essential to the functionality of their app. Whenever I want to order an Uber to or from a friend’s address I have to open my contacts and look it up, I should not have to do this for an app that is entirely centered around addresses.

I've had many apps ask for permission for this info and if I remember correctly the apps don't state, at that point, what they were going to do with it…so I automatically say "No".

I suppose some apps just reference the contacts locally and don't upload all the contact info to their own servers…but a user has to research what is happening to make an informed decision. It seems like the Uber or Lyft app ought to be able to do this.

It's the apps like LinkedIn (atrociously uploads your contact info and use that data to nag other LinkedIn users about possible "connections") that bother me…you can't "undo" the contact sharing.

For the reasons stated above - be glad they don't
It’s the one app I DO want this feature for

You can also get Uber and Lyft via Maps or Google Maps…and those apps can get access to Contacts.
How’s that work?

They might not have clearance for storing people’s address without their explicit consent.
This is why I don't give people I know in real life my real information. Just my number. People dumb enough to upload their contacts to random sites.

My boss tried clicking on link in a DM from a hot girl on Instagram yesterday. I facepalmed so hard and went into his contacts to make sure my work cell was the only cell saved on his phone because who knows what else he clicks on. Def don't need anymore robocalls.

I hear you. Exactly why I have a personal and a business number. You can’t control what others do. My personal number is with some of my family and friends who are strictly informed to not upload my data anywhere without my consent but then again I’m not checking their devices everyday. So who knows where my phone number is at present.

An exam- Personally I despise Facebook and have abandoned WhatsApp since they got acquired by Facebook and have requested them to delete all my data but people who I know use WhatsApp and as a result my number must be up there on their servers still connected to all my previous data. Who’s going to check what WhatsApp does after you request your data to be removed, especially now that the founder had to leave the company after Facebook acquisition thanks to a disagreement with mark sucker berg

I left LinkedIn a negative review regarding this matter, and the replied back stating that they do not do this... So I, and millions are imagining this.

First one

In Maps on my iPhone I can choose a destination and there's a figure hailing a ride on the bottom. Selecting that brings up Uber choices via some connection to the Uber App installed. Lyft doesn't show there although I think it's supposed to. Maybe it's because I've never actually used Lyft for a ride…but I've got the app set up to go.

In Google Maps there's also a figure hailing a ride once you've called up directions to a destination…on the horizontal scrollling travel method menu. When you pick it Uber and Lyft choices show up at the bottom. That method actually calls up the respective ride app with destination loaded.
