I know Steve announced the delay until fall for iOS 4 for the iPad, but I'm not sure I ever heard a reason why. Anyone know? Doesn't seem like it wouldn't have been possible to introduce it now. Is it just timing to give the new iPhone 4 its time in the spotlight, or is there a real technical reason that it can't be ready now?

We don't know, other than Steve saying it will be available this fall, in our case over here: Autumn.
That's all we and everyone knows thus far.
I'm not sure what the delay is... but I hope part of the work they're doing is to make it so that the iPad does a better job when running iPhone apps at double size.
It should be no different than running an app on an iPhone 4... if you make high resolution graphics for the iPhone 4, those should be used on the iPad as well (when viewing it at double size). Plus, proper scaling of fonts... again, just like on the iPhone 4.

Makes perfect logical sense: you introduce a new device less than a week before the new OS goes to beta testing. That is NOT enough time to sync the two branches and get your feedback reports from that first batch of users as they find what does and doesn't work. That's not just bugs, that's the WAY people use the device and how it differs from what you'd expected.
Another thing that I think a lot of people are missing with focusing on the split in release dates is that when you look away from the big headline features we've already got a lot of the changes in iOS4. There's a lot of smaller changes that were first introduced with 3.2 that the other devices are only getting now so it's not as big a gap as you may at first think.

I'm sure we are all hoping and praying that the extra time will allow Apple to add in many things that they have had fed back to them from users over the initial few weeks.
Correct any issues (not that I've really found any to correct) but mainly to add all sorts of useful features.
For me a really blindingly obvious one is in the photo app
You have (in effect) folders which hold multiple pictures.
If someone emails me a picture or I download one from a web page it does not go into a folder, it just goes onto the main page (the root folder you might call it)
The obvious thing (and what I tried the 1st time I played with the app) was to drag a picture into a folder, and was disappointed it did not work (seemed so logical that it should)
You can put your finger on a picture and wizz it around the screen, just letting go when you are hovering the image over a folder seems obvious (to me anyway) that it would move this pic into the folder.
That way, when I get pics I can put them in the folder I wish. At the moment you can't do that, which seems daft.
Only a small thing, but the kind of thing I'd like to see changed.

Um....the iPad's been out 3 months before iPhone 4 and yet they somehow figured out how to have iOS 4 ready for the new phone from day 1. Seems like the iPad and iPhone 4 share a lot of hardware. Certainly should have been possible technically. I find it hard to believe the OS team is gonna come to work tomorrow and go "gee maybe we should start on figuring out how to make this work on the iPad!"
They built the phone for iOS 4, and the built iOS 4 for the phone. iPhone 4 support was always a given.
I'm guessing August. Complete guess, though.
But certainly iPad is closer to iPhone 4 than iPhone 3GS or iPod touch are and iOS 4 is ready for them. Granted they were known entities before iPad. Also the new OS can play friendly with iPad apps, because many of them are universal. I'm sure I'm underestimating the work required but can't help but feel it's more of a marketing decision than a technical one.
That'd be cool, though it'd likely be late August at best.
What I'd like to see is an interim update please... Mainly bugfixes with just maybe a lil' added feature popped in there... universally available brightness control, perhaps...

Ok, serious answer? Apple only has so many developers. They had to raid developers from other teams (OSX) just to accomplish what they have. Also, Apple is secretive, and the iPhone 4 and iPad teams didn't have knowledge of each other's work. They now need to "merge the codebases", which takes time.

Seems to be the case....but now it makes me wonder if I own the "redheaded step-child" of the iOS family? If the hardware/software of iPad 1 was developed in a vacuum, how well will it end up fitting in??....surely now that it's in the open, the future iPads and iPhones will be developed more hand in hand. I don't remember this kind of disconnect between iPod touch and iPhone before.
I would rather 4.0 launch on the iPhone, then over the next couple of months, tweak it to it's stable on the iPad, plus perhaps a few new features..? Who really knows. Remember, the iPad was at OS 3.2 while the iPhone was at 3.1.3. Perhaps in fall, we will get 4.2, while iPhones/iPods will be stuck on 4.0/4.1.X/... Just a thought. I highly doubt Apple will be leaving us "in the dust" in regards to the OS.
My prediction is we'll see iOS 4 for the iPad early-mid August. Quite simply, the next month is going to be iPhone 4 crazy... Look how long some people took downloading iOS 4 today... Wait til Thursday and again when the next shipment of iPhone 4's comes in the middle of July. Then wait again until the white iPhone 4's ship... more madness...

Oh, I so totally disagree with that sentiment. Absolutely question what you don't understand, but do so critically, to seek that understanding.
if you want some perspective, look how many people are viewing the iphone forum vs the ipad forum. right now it's 10 to 1 iphone. iphone is by far a much bigger priority for apple, and even though the OS looks very similar on both devices, i can imagine there are many differences between them and ipad's 3.2 just came out in april. i want an update too, but it's all about dollars and cents.
3.2 is pretty stable on the iPad, so I hope that when iOS 4 is released for the iPad that it will also be stable.
I would rather wait til August to know I'm getting a stable OS instead of it being released at the same time as the iOS for iPhone.
