Why is it people need apps for GPush, I don't get it.

I just got my mother an old iPhone 3G. She got her own maildomain, I hooked it up with the GMAIL servers and interface and enabled mail and calendar with IMAP.

Then I set it up with the iPhone as described on the GMAIL help pages, and BOOM - exchange.. .pushes all her mails through GMAIL servers (also calendar).

So... can anyone enlighten me?

Apps like GPush and PushMail offer actual push notifications – i.e., an actual pop-up message (similar to that of an SMS) that displays information such as the sender and subject of an email. The iPhone itself does not [yet] offer this type of notification service. I would imagine you are only seeing the badge notification directly on the Mail app icon, displaying the number of unread messages with your current setup.

Hate to burst your bubble, but push notifications polls a server also.

hate to burst your bubble, but push notifications does not poll a server. push notifications are pushed to the phone; polling a server means that the phone is checking with the server at a regular interval to see if their are new messages.

Some of us use the an iPhone for both work and personal and have email addresses accordingly. You can only have one Exchange server on the iPhone, that one is for work (for me). I still have a Gmail account as well that I like to receive push notifications for.

Not to say I use Gpush, but it is a reason to have it. I have Gmail forward everything to MobileMe and thus gets pushed almost instantly (<5 seconds) to the iPhone.

Paying 0.99 for GPush is cheaper than buying a domain or renting servers.

Enlightened yet?
