Why does a firefox drive appear on my desktop

Hi Guys,

new to the Mac, I downloaded firefox, opened the dmg and dragged the firefox icon to my applications folder, then deleted the dmg and dragged the firefox drive to the trash.

I then dragged the firefox icon to the dock, and when I launch firefox from the dock, i get a firefox drive on my desktop. Why is that? Is that normal? Same thing happens with thunderbird. The drive remains on the desktop after I've quit the application.

Wait, Keymoo...I'm confused...how can you delete the image while it's still mounted? Or, if you can do such a thing, why would it still be on the desktop for you to drag to the trash, when it doesn't exist anymore?

You dragged the FF icon from the apps folder to the desktop, right? Try going to your apps folder, and getting info on firefox there, and making sure that (a) it's an application file (and not an alias) and (b) it's 20-30MB in size (which should be about right).

1. Download the Firefox 1.0.4.dmg.
2. Double-click the Firefox 1.0.4.dmg to mount it.
3. Drag and drop the Firefox icon from the mounted disk image to your /Applications folder.
4. Unmount the disk image (Drag the white Firefox icon on your desktop to the trash).
5. Delete the Firefox 1.0.4.dmg and empty the Trash.
6. Open your /applications folder, then drag and drop the Firefox icon on the dock.
7. Click the Firefox icon in the dock to launch it!

But seriously, to 6 and 7: just start Firefox by double-clicking it, from the Applications folder and when it's running just drag the dock icon from the furthest right to wherever you want it... (I've had some issues with starting Firefox from the dock (the first time after installing/re-installing), and always like to start it from the Applications folder.)

Well, I'd like to know myself, what I did, I dragged the icons off the dock and then started the process over again, and it seemed to work. I don't know what I did last time to screw it up.

You probably dragged the firefox icon to your dock before putting in applications and dragging it in from there.

Probably. Sounds familiar. I love the way the Mac installs and uninstalls applications. In Windows, you have to go through an install routine, and then use Add/Remove Programs to remove it, which takes ages, and sometimes fails. With the Mac you just drag one icon to the trash and it's gone. Cool.
