Why does Apple only allow updates over wifi, especially since we now have 5G?
Not sure I understand their rationale.

Maybe so it doesn't accidentally eat through someone's data? Not everyone has an unlimited plan. I'm a very light phone user (when I'm away from home) and only have a 2 GB/month plan through Cricket. On the other hand, perhaps it's a mandate by carriers so unlimited users don't use excessive data with updates. I imagine thousands or millions of people updating via LTE/5G would quickly clog the airways.

You are probably right! I just found that the 5G higher data settings for update were off.
Updating my iPhone now! Happy Holidays!

You can enable OS updates over 5G. Go in your settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options ->Data Mode -> Allow More Data on 5G.

Even with that enabled, you need 5G coverage for iOS updates. If you are on LTE, you’ll need Wi-Fi tu download the update as usual.

Hope it helps! Merry Christmas!

EDIT: Sorry I didn’t see that you’ve already found the more data toggle
