Why does Face ID no longer work 75% of the time?

iOS 16.3.1, iPhone13 Pro Max, I have re-configured Face ID several times, yes, I configure Set Up Alternate Appearance & Face ID w Mask each time. But the stupid FaceID seems to be blind to my face at least 75% of the time. Shut the phone down, start it up, no Face ID. Always must enter passcode. Open apps, no faceID, occasionally it works.

Never used to have issues w my iPhone 11.

Anyone know how to get FaceID working?

Make sure the camera area on front of phone is clean. I've had issues where cleaning has fixed problem

Bingo! I was waiting to respond after a few days of using the iPhone. The clear case I purchased was actually dirty. I could not tell until I took the case apart and examined from its back. Used a microfiber towel to wipe completely clean this time. FaceID works evey time now. Thanks for the suggestion about cleaning, even if it looks clean.
